Engine accessibility on the '08 vs.'09
Engine accessibility on the '08 vs.'09
In looking at some of the photos of the new '09 Fit, one of the drawbacks I anticipated with the '09 now seems real. The cab forward design has really reduced engine accessibility over the '07 and '08 models. Just look at how the wiper cowl seem to sit right over the top of the intake cover. It looks like plug changes and anything done on the rear of the engine will be harder for a DIYer without a lift. I've owned both a '90 and a '99 Dodge Caravan and the same thing happened. The '90's engine compartment was spacious. The cab forward design of the third generation Chyrsler minivans (for the '99) made changing the rear plugs a four-hour order with the needed removal of the wiper cowl, the air intake plenum, and the EGR tubing to get to the plugs. The ability to work on my Fit played a significant role in my decision to get another '08 rather than wait for the '09 model when we decided to buy our second Fit. Was this a concern for anybody else? If you always go the a dealership for work it would make little difference. I prefer to do virtually all my own maintenance and repairs.
