oil change

I have used synthetic lubes for over 25 years, in 8 cars & trucks. I only drive about 6K per year in my Fit, so change the oil once a year and ignore the maintenance minder.

quoting myself which is pretty damn weird!!
I've noticed many fitfreaks don't seem to care what Honda's maintenance directives are on oil changes. Good for you on your relaxed lifestyle, perhaps I should learn something. Unfortunately when My 85 MR2's engine blew I'm glad I had my documentation in perfect order. I'm going to quote the Toyota people. Prior to our meeting they told me "you better have your oil change records in order". I did and they bought me a new motor. Call me anal but as far as viscosity, oil type, filter type (honda, of course), silly oil change washer and oil change interval I plan on shoving the documentation right back in Hondas face just like I did to Toyota. I like that Honda's got all my documentation on computer, that's cool as hell. Do I still actually own a 3 ring binder with the paper hard copies of ALL transcations that have transpired. Hell yes! Trust Honda with the documentation which could at some point be used against them? In the immortal words of Maddona "when monkeys fly outta my ass"!

If I am reading these posts accurately, are you saying go ahead and keep a lookout when the indicator says it's time for an oil change?
Reason I'm asking, my mileage is just over 3,300 miles and have been wondering to go with the Honda advice of the 5,000 mile oil change or go on my previous MO which has always been 3,000 miles.
And I'm not sure what is meant by "synthetic." Are these "synthetic" preferred types of oils?
Thanks,
CarGirl

Just go by what the maintinence minder tells you. It was designed to accurately estimate the wear on the oil, and assumes you use conventional dino oil. Use synthetic whenever it tells you to change and you'll NEVER have an oil-related problem.

I change mine every 2500-3000 miles.
And this is recomended by my dealer as the oil is usually over 6 months old (I don't drive the Fit very much).
Anyway, in cold temps like mine the oil should be swapped every 6 months regardless. Way to much cold weather condensation if you wait any longer.

Then why do you waste money changing it too often?

Edit, I should have said 4 - 5k miles. Either way assuming i am wasting a little money by changing it a little early, its not nearly as much as the extra expense of throwing in royal purple or mobil 1.
Im not saying those arent good oils, I just cant justify it in something that has 100 freaking horsepower and gets driven at constant speeds for a commute.
All my V8's have gotten synthetic for the most part, then again I also didnt have to wind those cars up....

im running mobil1 (silver cap) and honda filter based on oil indicator. no more no less.
i agree with manxman on the shorter distance driven cars running synthetic.
10k or 1yr is plenty.

i was told to wait for indicator for the 1st oil change, which i just did my first oil change over the thx giving weekend; i think i will stick with 5k miles after this, i still haven't made up my mind if i want to switch to syn this early though
