GD: "Cheaper" Fog Light Replacement
 

Hi guys, I installed some GD Base fog lights the other day on my GD Sport. The reason I went with the Base assemblies opposed to getting the Sport replacement assemblies is due to sheer costs.

Please note: Neither I or FitFreak.net will be responsible for any mishaps, damages, injuries, etc. occurred during this D.I.Y. Proceed this simple D.I.Y. at your own risk.

MSRP for one Sport fog light is about $225.xx to $243.xx depending on color and dealer/part site opposed the MSRP of $128.xx for one Base fog light. During the process of installing, I also removed the fog light lens from the housing itself to cover it in Lamin-X film.

If you haven't removed your factory fog light assemblies yet, you will need a 10mm socket to remove the one screw securing it to the front bumper. In addition to that if you haven't removed the housing yet, you will need to disconnect the connecter for the fog light bulbs themselves.

To remove the fog light lenses from their housings you will need a Phillips screw driver with a PH1 tip. And only 2 screws will need to be removed.

You will need to remove this screw, which secures the lens to the housing.

And also remove this screw, which secures the light adjustment bracket to the back of the fog light lens. After removing the screw, pop the light adjustment bracket off.

Note: DO NOT LOOSEN/TIGHTEN the screw surrounded by the spring (Circled and X'ed in red) at this time. That is for adjusting the fog light aim.

At this point, the lens is ready for removal. With the screw out, pull the lens out of the housing. Note: There is a guide pin in the housing, so you may need to move the lens up or down as you are pulling it from the housing.

Once the housing is out, now would be a good time to put a protective film over it if you have some. I had a 25 foot roll of smoked Lamin-X film laying around and decided to put it to use. :thumbups:

For those interested in picking up some protective film like this, these are sold either by the sheet, roll and even pre-cut. If you get them pre-cut, it would be wise to install them with the housing on so you can accurately cover the exposed areas of your fog lens.

I happened to have the backing paper from a pre-cut, so I used it to make a larger stencil. (Then later discarded the stencil and "trimmed" 5 inch squares to fit the lens :p )

I bought a set of these. Even if they arent legit OEM honda (they are. but just in case you dont believe me), they have the same beam as oem. Not crap cutoff like most ebay replacements.

A STEAL at $66.49.

the driver side fog light on my 2007 fit sport model cracked. i bought the driver side base model one on ebay, do you guys think that i can just swap the fog light and bulb and not use the matte black over? cuz the fog light cover on my sport model is blue..

If they are OEM Fit Base housings for the same side then I shouldn't see a problem. Just remove the two screws circled in green and transfer over. It will not affect your fog light's aim.

OK, I'm confused about two things:
1. why would you want to cover the lens in smoke color? Wouldn't that reduce the functionality of the fog light? I get the "looks" thing; just wonderin'
2. when I click on the ebay link you provided, there is a pair of "OEM" lenses, smoke colored for $55. Why not just pick those instead of tearing apart ones for $66?

Well the smoked ones you're talking about are not OEM, whereas the ones Hootie linked to are in fact OEM.

I mean, you decide whether you want to go OEM or not, in many cases it really doesn't matter whether you go OEM or aftermarket, but sometimes the quality and reliability of an original part is worth the extra.

As for the smoked yellow film, well I guess you could say the main "reason" people do it is for looks, but it has functionality. Yellow light penetrates through water much more effectively than white light, and that's why you will see that some cars come from factory with yellow fogs. Yellow light is also easier and more 'visible' to the eyes. So that helps in fog, rain, and snow.


Now, a lot of people will disagree, because yellow lights have been 'proven' to not make any difference compared to white lights but I'd rather trust my own eyes and perception instead of some fancy scientific study.

I just picked up a set of these OEM Honda on ebay for $60 to replace my damaged fogs on my gd3 sport ssm.


These are great, it's the perfect matte black, which I think looks better than the color matched.
