whining sound from front of engine

2009 Fit Sport 5sp all stock with 71,000+ miles. Makes a whining sound like an old Chevy power steering pump gone bad. (Yes, I know Fit steering is electric) Same noise at idle with trans in neutral. Increases with RPMs. No change with radio off, ac on/off, or alternator under load from headlights/flashers. Can't feel wobble in any pulleys, but that maybe because belt is still tight. Searched other threads, no plausible answers found. Suggestions? Thank you.

Maybe you're hearing the cam chain?

I know I can hear mine once in a while.

Use a dowel rod, mechanic's stethoscope, etc. and listen for noise from the water pump, compressor and belt tensioner.

Thanks. I'll try that.

Was unable to determine on my own. Dealer said it is idler/tensioner.

Was indeed the idler/tensioner pulley. VERY easy to take off and re-install. Bought a replacement bearing for under $4. Paid a guy at machine shop $5 to push out the old one and press in the new one. If you need further details, let me know. I'll be glad to talk you through the process. Thanks to all the posts and replies from members. I love my Fit!

Idler pulley / tensioner noise

Hi all, I just started getting this noise on my 2007 Fit with ~185K miles. Took to shop and they couldn't hear a significant noise and didn't know for sure, though suspected a bearing. After doing some youtubing, this is the noise and it sounds like it coudl be ideler pulley / tensioner.

My question is given that this noise just started a day ago, is it safe to drive my car ~200 miles back home from where I am or will I risk a breakdown on the freeway?

Thanks all!

We had a similar noise (at first, only when cold) and it turned out to be the A/C compressor clutch.

See if you agree:

If it IS the A/C clutch, yes you can drive it home. When ours finally failed the A/C wouldn't work is all. (But it was quiet, LOL)

Looks like an issue with Blaze Orange Fits!

Would you please give more details on how you replaced the bearing? I'm looking at the OEM parts diagram and I don't see a separate bearing assembly, just the whole pulley and bearing cap. The tensioner pulley in my 2009 Fit with 90K miles seems to have started whining after driving it in -5 degree (F) weather.

Thanks in advance
