Stock Air Box mods?

has anyone tried modifying their stock airbox to get better throttle response and maybe a touch more torque or power? i was looking at getting an intake but the reviews are mixed, and i just can't help but look at the Spoon fit that uses the stock box and wonder what secrets are inside...

now... settle down. i know, i know... can't draw blood from a stone. but i do know that almost all factory air boxes are designed for reducing the intake noise levels with a series of plastic buffers and mufflers. i modified my VW airbox, got rid of a lot of small tubing and major impedences, and saw a HUGE improvement in throttle response and mid-RPM performance... not any real power gains obviously, but it just felt (and sounded) better, yanno?

anyway, a K&N filter plus maybe some time with a dremel... whaddya think?

I'd be interested in what can be done to the oem intake.

if you search the word 'air box' there's a thread on here about it, that's what the link is. i'd be interested in any further info from the original poster of that thread.

I wouldn't bother. I'd just get an aftermarket intake.

idk about that...spoon knows their stuff and their fit is running pretty much just a drop in filter. They say that the stock airbox actually does quite well because of its design.

But what am I saying...I have an aftermarket intake so.../shrug

because if the filter sucks more then you gain power. ha ha ha
i always wondered why vacuum companies never used the sales slogan "our vacuum sucks big time!!"

IMO it wouldnt be worth it. You would end up slicing and dicing the airbox for maybe .7 of a horsepower. If you really must just get an aftermarket intake. But I even see that as a waste.

kind of a good point, but the stock air box has some to offer if its done right. SHG_Mike did his pretty nicely, but if you're looking for good hp there is no need to keep it N/A

the reason behind the spoon fit having less hp is that the focus of that fit was handling not power

So they tuned it to lose power?

i dont know im rocking the k&n filter right now. and i love it.

i think i like it as much as my fujita CAI.

i like the quietness, but if i had to do something. i would hack the bottom, retain the clips and run it as a super short ram.

or i would attach a dryer hoose with a velocity stack at the end to my front end, and run it to the tube part of the stock air box. that way the car will be getting some cold air and its constantly flowing unless stop of course.

I don't think it's fair to say that the Spoon drop-in filter lost 1 horsepower on that one dyno run considering there must have been some heat soak from the previous run with the stock filter, it wasn't a controlled test. Granted you're not going to make much power with a drop-in, I'm certain that you won't lose power by using a Spoon drop-in.

If that were the case, Spoon wouldn't use them in their racecars. The Spoon Fit has 125 hp.

that's really good to know. i think i'll get the k&n and check out the plumbing, see if there's any way to make it better pre-filter.

and just to be clear: not trying to gain some magical 10 hp from a hole cut in a box. what i'd like to know is if there are any obvious NVH baffles or mufflers before the filter that could be removed or modified for better throttle response, as honestly it sucks right now. Honda's engineers are brilliant, but they also want to sell quiet cars to old ladies. i don't mind a little noise under the hood if the trade is for less of a wet sock pedal feel.
