Oil filters

Besides OEM filters, which brand and model would you guys reccommend? Are the Fram any good?

They're all fine, FRAM is good, I personally use the cheapest Purolator filter.

Personally, I would not ever use FRAM, unless you were doing frequent oil changes (1-3k miles). I use WIX filters (NAPA Gold). Little more expensive, but tests have proven their superiority. Look at the internal cutouts and see for yourself. Fram is garbage.

Like I said above, you can get it at NAPA. Mobil1 and Amsoil are other good brands, although a bit more expensive.

I use the mobil 1 extended mileage filter. They are 15$ but occasionally go on sale for 10$. I buy these because I change my oil 2-3 times a year since I drive so little. I did about 10k kilometres in the past 2 years. If you drive more and change your filter more frequently, then I would consider a cheaper alternative.

The OEM filter is a Fram tough guard filter in a painted blue canister. Fram uses cardboard end caps and a metal crimp so that's why I prefer other brands but I'm sure the fram filters are fine or else honda wouldn't use them as their standard filter.

I would be weary of the very bottom line NAPA filters (pro select). They use a combination style anti drain back valve. I've read some not so glowing reports of such valves so I like to stick to at least medium quality filters that have independent valves.

IMO, OEM Honda filters are a fine choice. They are more like the high-end $10 FRAM filters than the $4 OCOD: (Orange Can of Death). Cost less than $6 ea when you buy in 6 packs from the online dealers. (We have three Hondas in the family so this makes sense for me)

I've been using Purolator PureOne for the last couple oil changes. They seem like good filters and most of the reviews I've read are 4 or 5 star reviews.

I'm sure Mobil 1 are good, as well as the green HAMP oil filters seen in ICB motorsport. Might try those next time.

I've always wondered if the K&N Pro series are quality filters as well?

K&N's are good as well. I've used them and seemed to be of good quality. But they're expensive and I really don't see any benefit over Wix.

I've used Purolators as well, but I'm not keen on the leaf springs. Coil springs in the Wix will be more accurate and dependable. I say that with a history of zero issues with other leaf spring oil filters. But makes me feel better.

Researching the different types of coils you mentioned, I stumbled upon this article. Seems like some good info.
