Tint and Heat

Hey guys!
I got the idea for this post from another post about air conditioning, but i didn't want to threadjack so i started a new post.

ANYWAYS,

Does having a tint decrease the temperature of the car inside?
I remember I used to think so, so i got my old Protege5 tinted. It didn't help for crap, especially in Riverside (socal). After I got it, I remembered that black actually "attracts" heat...so i was wondering if it might actually even be hotter.

We should do a test and have a tinted and a non-tinted fit park next to each other in extreme temperature and measure the interior and exterior temperatues before and after a 2 hour sit. Anyone down to try it?

this would be an interesting experiment. you would have to park the cars where the sun is facing the side or rear of the car, because if you face the windshield toward the sun it will not be a fair comparison. unless you have your front windshield illegaly tinted

there are some tint that have a metallized layer that helps reflect the UV rays and heat away from the windows...gotta see what kind of tint the shop puts on your car

if you're getting a $150 tint job all around, i doubt you're getting it

Well to allow the tint to help out the temperature in the car, you need air to circulate. Tinting will only help if you open your windows a little bit to allow air to flow into and out of the car. If you live in an unsafe area where there are a lot of people getting their cars jacked, then I wouldn't suggest doing this. I find that the window visors help a lot since you can open your windows a little bit and no one will notice.

It depends a lot on the tint. A good quality tint will block a significant portion of the heat, but a cheap one may mostly just block visible light.

I got 3M Color-Stable, and I've noticed it helps significantly on my drive in to work (where the sun shines in the driver's side windows most of the way there). When I got my tint done, they also had a ceramic-based tint, and a demo of it which was very impressive as far as heat-blocking, however it cost twice as much, so I went with the 3M.

Balorn - How much did your tint job cost you? I'm assuming you had it installed vs. doing it yourself?

just the materials that its made from, I think the ceramic has some kinda of physical ceramic its made from, whereas the regular kinda tint is usually made from darkened plastic black tint..

tint only prevents a certain amout of heat going in to the car. If you have windows closed heat will not get released.

...and that's why it's driving me crazy, waiting for my window visors to arrive! I have the 100% metallized tint, but can't take the chance of leaving my windows cracked, yet. I would like a few words with whomever ordered the 100 degree temperatures...

yes very true but do you really think that having the window open 1/4 inch will hurt. I think you hit it on the butten about letting air circulate because what happens is the little bit of heat acumulation that does pass the tint will continue to add with time. I mean the the temp will increase with time. kinda like solar heat panels. I tinted my window very dark and the car still gets stuffy and hot... My best soultion is to crack the windows and or cover the car with a sun reflective car cover for long outside parking. I use budge tyvec car cover which actually does not fit. I will buy a new one when that come out with the proper fit for the Fit

It cost me just a smidge under $200 before tax to get it installed. From what I've seen, that's about what you should expect to pay for a good tint. The ceramic was about $400.
