Bike Hitch

I'm new to this site. After leasing a Fit for the last 13 years, I finally purchased my lease because I love the Fit so much and was so bummed when I found out they were discontinuing this model. Now that I own my car, I am interested in finding out how to have a bike hitch installed on my car. Not sure where to go to get this done. A bike shop; my honda dealer; etc? I live in a a Chicago suburb. TIA

Is it something you can do yourself, or are you trying to get it done at a shop?

I bought a hitch for my 2012 and it came with great instructions. I'm just waiting for it to get a little warmer. I am sure the little plastic pushpins that hold the bumper on will be the biggest problem as they're likely to crack and break.

If you're comfortable rotating your own tires or changing your own oil, you're fully capable of installing a hitch on your Fit. It helps to have some ramps, but you can also use a jack and jackstands or a couple 2x6 boards to raise the rear of the car. It does help to have a second set of hands, but one person can do it. As far as the plastic push pins go, the key is to use a small flat screw driver to pop out the center before trying to remove the pin. The pins are probably full of crud as well, so it doesn't hurt of spray some form of plastic-safe cleaner/lubricant (even water) to break up the dirt.

Check out etrailer.com for hitch options with install videos.

If that's too much for you, the etrailer website will help you find local installers. Alternatively, U-haul sells and installs hitches for most cars.

I haven't decided if I will put a hitch on my Fit yet but did install one on my previous Yaris hatchback. It was very handy for a two-bike rack and also made an excellent rear jacking point for rotating tires.

I took advantage of the nice weather to finally install my E-trailer hitch. An easy job, despite their website rating it as "10/10" in terms of difficulty. I made my install a little more tricky by losing the instructions at some point in the past, so I had to just wing it. I had installed one of their hitches on my WRX a couple years ago and this one was really similar. A little easier actually. I also used the opportunity to spray everything behind the plastic bumper with Blaster "Surface Shield" to help fight rust. Those areas are normally inaccessible with the plastic bumper in place.
