Bikes block tail lights

I found this site while searching for an answer to this problem. It great to see others love their Fits!

We have a 2013 FS with the Blue Ox tow plate and Smi braking system which we flat tow behind a 2014 Navion 24' IQ motor home.
When towing, I put the key one click back from running and flip on the two installed switches for towing (I think they are acc disconnect & brake on )

On the Fit we mount a bike rack on the Draw Tite hitch wired for lights.
the problem is with the two Giant Sedona bikes on the rack the tail lights on the car are almost totally blocked. There isn't any power to the wire of the Draw Tite hitch with the key in the towing position We can not hang the bikes on the mh ladder they are too big and heavy for that. How can I add lights without compromising the wiring of the Fit or other ideas.

thanks

I assume you have a little light converter box for the hitch wiring on the Fit (to translate from the separate brake and turn bulbs to combined ones). It seems this box isn't getting power when you have the car in "toad mode", or else is isolated (presumably with the rest of the car's electrical system) from the stop and turn light power from the motorhome.

I think the simplest solution, though perhaps not the most elegant, would be to wire the extra set of lights to the harness from the motorhome and bypass the usual car wiring altogether. One easy way to do this would be to build a sort of inline adapter that fits between the car and the cable to the motorhome and taps off the appropriate wires for some magnetic mount lights (or whatever). A similar setup could also be more or less permanently installed in the car.

It may be possible to hook up the motorhome light wires and the trailer lighting converter box installed in the Fit (which translates from separate brake and turn lights to combined ones) such that the trailer light connector on the Fit is active in "toad mode", but it may not be especially easy between isolation diodes and non-powered circuits and so forth.

Skip the Fit wiring all together, an extra 20ft of wire from your motorhome 7 way tow connector to magnet mounted lights on the bike rack, done.

You can always get a roof mount set-up. A little more expensive, but it gives you the versatility to carry more things, and still have access to the hatch.
