Speaker help....before my head comes off.
Speaker help....before my head comes off.
Ok, so I went over and bought the Infinity Reference 6022i's.....apparently they make a Reference 6022si that is a slim version....the ones I bought don't fit. Ok, my screw up. So I headed over to Circuit City to buy my second choice. Polk DB651. I've had Polk's before and they sound pretty sweet....I figured I'm not going to be amping them or anything, so they would probably be fine.
Buy the Polk db651 6.5" Coaxial Speaker and other Car speakers at circuitcity.com
According to the Circuit City website, they fit in the front and rear doors on the Fit. Guess what. The cage on the back of the speaker bottoms out. So I need some help here. Am I just doing something wrong and not installing them correctly or did I just buy another set of speakers that won't fit in the Fit? I feel like I'm doing something wrong with this second set since everywhere I've checked says they should fit. I need some help here guys, my car doesn't have any friggin door panels and I work tomorrow lol
Were you mounting the speakers directly to the door, or did you have a spacer/braket between the 2? My Kappas up front are very deep, I had to take 2 of the plastic spacers that come with the set and use it behind 1 speaker. Luckily I had 2 sets, and since I didnt need to use the brackets on the rear doors since my speaker back there are slim, I was able to use the 2 spacers for my rear speakers on my other front one. I initially tried doing it witout them, but it hit also so that was my solution.
That's actually a really good idea but I'm running into the same issue front and back. Here's my gripe. Circuit City's website says the Polk's I bought fit.....Crutchfields site says that the DB651s for slim mount fit but doesnt list the others. I checked out Polk's site and the only difference in the speakers was the tweeter being mounted lower. So if that's the case, then these should fit.....hell the infinity's should fit.
Are you running the same speakers in the front and back Rod2Rice?

Did the cage on the back of your speakers, front or back doors, bottom out like mine are or did yours fit flush into the holes in the door? It seems like every speaker I look at that will "Fit" has a 2'' mounting depth which is what these Polks have, so they should fit right?
UGH!! lol This is probably so easy and I'm making it way too difficult. I know I sound like a broken record, I'm just not sure what to do at this point. I'd hate to take the speakers back and then order a set to have the same issue....
I reckon I'll sleep on it. Anyone please feel free to chime in with some ideas....please. lol

I am running different speakers in back. Backs are Kappa 62.9i full range, front are Kappa 60.9cs components. I have no hitting in back, and I am surprised you would also since the rear doors have the safety glass that does not roll all the way down. Both fronts and backs the cage hit the opening for the stock speakers, so I had to do some cutting to make them fit, since the cages on these have big bulges in them.
Hard to see from the pic, but for an idea this is what my backs look like. See that bulge on the cage, was a pain for clearance so had to do some door cutting. My fronts were even deeper than this, but adding the 2 spacers per speaker made it clear.

Yea I don't really want to do any hacking if I don't have to. Crutchfield is showing the slim mount versions of the Polk's I bought as fitting, which doesn't make much sense considering the mounting depth is the same and they just shortened the tweeter.
The back of that speaker looks VERY familiar. I'm still not understanding how a slim mount would fit and the other wouldn't. Both Polk's have the same mount depth....the Infinity's are a little different according to the specs, not enough to keep the cage from bottoming out I don't think. My frustration is making me sleepy lol

just hack em. It's not like ur going to be taking off the speakers. U upgraded them to get better sound and i don't think ur gonna switch em back 2 stock, unless u wanna sell the car and keep the speakers.
Anyways, if u are gonna hack it, do what i did. I took the OEM speaker and basically GUTTED everything but the frame. I took a dremel and cut out EVERYTHING excep the edge. That way, my speaker mounts to the frame of th oem speaker and i don't have to drill any extra holes in the door panel which is a no-no. I also just re-clipped the speaker back in the door so no drilling required. The OEM speaker has a nice fat lip around the edge for u to mount ur speaker to.
If u really are handy with a soldering gun, do this. Take off the OEM harness plug by cutting it with a dremel. Then take the OEM contacts of the oem speaker plug and solder new wires leading to ur new speakers. That way, u won't have to cut up ur OEM speaker wiring or mickey-mousing it or having to buy a set of matching plugs from crutchfield which can run u $15 a pair.
But before u do that, make sure u find out the polarity of the speaker. An easy way to check if the polarity is correct, take an AA battery and run some wire to the positive and negative terminals of the oem speaker's wires. ONLY TOUCH IT FOR A SPLIT SECOND OR ELSE U WILL RISK BLOWING THE OEM SPEAKER!! Once u touch the positve and negative ends of the battery to the terminals of the speaker, watch the cone. If it pops OUT, polarity is correct. If it pops IN, polarity is reversed.
Hope the info helps with ur speaker install.

Honestly, I'd rather put the factory speakers back in beofre I started hacking stuff up. I mean, I understand that aftermarket speakers might take a little coaxing to get installed and I'm ok with that, but I really don;t want to hack up my car or the speakers I bought. I'd sooner put the factory speakers back in or let someone try to install them for me.
I could try using the factory speaker like mentioned above, but if that doesn't work out, then I'm out a factory speaker. How much is a factory speaker anyways?

Funny you mentioned that. I was doing some research on the site thinking I can't be the only one with this issue and found this thread...
I think that will work perfectly....well hopefully. I'm at work now but I'll give it a shot when I get home and keep you guys informed.
Hack solution (0$ spent on mounting spacers etc):
Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself, nor FITFREAK.NET take any responsibility for the outcome of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!
STEP 1
DESTROY the crappy stock speaker

that is the crappy base model speaker...(I'm not sure if the sport has better ones or not.)
STEP 2
CUT old speaker out of it's mounting bracket like so...

STEP 3
PLACE new speaker inside mounting bracket

STEP 4
SECURE new speaker into old speaker using ZIP TIES!!

note: zip ties on top and bottom of unit.
you probably want to use some sort of double sticky foam tape or something between the bracket and the speaker, it will prevent viberating/rattles.
STEP 5
MOUNT the new speaker into it's new home

STEP 6
now the tricky part, the speaker unit thingy now sticks out too far for the door panel to go back on so it will require a "trimming"

unfortunately the only tool I could find for the job was this knife
. I would suggest a tool desined for jobs like this.... such as a dremmel.
after cutting the panel a bit on the inside the speaker will fit perfectly. I put a foam material (similar to the one showed above) around the part I cut away to eliminate rattles etc.

I agree totally, but the shops around here leave a lot to be desired. I've seen and experienced some real hack jobs on installs....I can do a hack job myself
or just go to best buy or circuit city and get 1" spacers it comes with 8 holes. 4 to attach the spacer to the door and 4 to attach the speaker to the spacer. You can do this if you're afraid to hack up the original speaker. Also when removing the door panel, lower the window all the way to make sure the speaker magnet doesn't touch the window. Find the depth measurement of the speaker and measure the depth you have from the door panel to the window and the difference between those two numbers should give you an idea of how thick your spacer needs to be. They come in 1/2", 3/4", and 1".
The speakers has a 2'' mounting depth. I'm not sure what the distance from the window to the panel would be....but I see your point. I need to return some stuff to Best Buy on my lunch break so I'll see if they have any of the spacers available. Good thought for sure. Thanks.
I'm going to try doing the mod to one of the factory spacers when I get home and see how that works too.

Sometimes it takes someone that is the best at hacking. I tossed mine immediately and modified the whole interior so I can't even recall what you are going thru. Sorry dude.
Hey I appreciate any help or thoughts. Thanks for at least chiming in man. It has crossed my mind more then once to take it to someone. I'm still pondering it....but where's the fun in that?
I installed the Polk DB651S in the front and rear doors of my Fit. I simply removed the stock speakers and their hardware, installed half inch spacers at each location by drilling 4 holes in each door and mounted the speakers. No other modifications were needed. The clearance between the speakers and door panels was perfect. I don't see what all the fuss is about, just be sure you purchase the Polk slim version, DB651 (S).
BTW,
Speaking of shops...
I've had multiple experiences over 35+ years with different shops in my area. I've come to the conclusion that it's best to do it yourself, continue to seek advice. The key is to be patient. Installing aftermarket speakers is not a difficult job. There may be shops that do wonderful installs, I have yet to experience one. Remember, no one cares more for your vehicle than you do. Just my 2 cents...
