Home made short shifter

I am pretty sure i am the only one to have this on my fit. I got the idea from driving my uncles bmw. I have the skunk2 short shifter adapter and i wanted an even shorter throw. I pulled the shift lever out, cut out about 3 and a half inches, and welded the threaded section onto the shortened lever and PRESTO!! THE ULTIMATE SHORT SHIFT!

sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. Shifts with only wrist motion.

haha thats ridiculously low. would remind me of suicide shifting on choppers.

what material is it steel, s.s or aluminum?

isn't that NOT a short shifter?

aren't short shifters longer and closer to the steering wheel, but require less motion to shift?

I'm sort of lost on why the shortening of the handle and putting it further away from your available hands.

(reminds me of a video someone made me watch that a girl liked about her nice stick shift.......)

Do you have the video still?

Cutting the handle does not make it a "short shifter". The short part comes from the length of the throw at the gear box. Not that it is stumpy. Remember, bigger is better for the height, not the length.

I didn't keep the video... it was sort of interesting what an S2000, and a Porsche can do for a woman..... I don't think the stains will come out of the upholstery

to answer my self its not aluminum (magnetic) and looks like stainless steel to me.

It is a mild steel with a coating on it. Most stainless steels are martinsetic and not magnetic. I used a 308 stainless rod to weld it just in case. plus it wont rust.

im sure you could. make sure you put a little bevel on both sides and it should hold. depends on the process you use too. I used tig. i went the stainless route to save it from any corrosion.

yea i want to do this but i only have a mig welder thats not set up for stainless. I think ill give it a try. Worst comes to worst i can buy a mugen short shifter

did you remove it from the car before welding. From the diy mugen install it looks like stuff has to be broken to get it out

I took it out of the car first. It was difficult but everything came out fine. took about 30 minutes to get it out and about 10 to put it back in.
