i personally rock my wakaba sideways and in the wrong place :].
you should definitely invest in a spring that could knock out that gap, and an exhaust to even out the intake.

and drivers are warned to avoid them, because IIRC if an accident occurs the other driver incurs most of the damage total?
btw i know why one melted and the other didn't, you're rocking 2 different companies, the one with the white suction cup has much more quality.
as for springs i'd go with tanabe GF210's.
its pretty subtle and would look good with the wheels.
