Ice Racing: Training Day

Well tomorrow I am off to a full day of winter driving which takes place on a frozen lake! I have to admit, I have never done anything quite like this before.

There is going to be a fairly elaborate cone course setup around the lake, the program will cover all of the basics of how to maintain control and also some of the more technical parts of piloting a car around an ice track.

Should be fun, I will try to put some pictures up on Sunday!

That was wicked fun! Drifting on a lake = EPIC AWESOMENESS!!! I don't think I have ever held a 6 minute sideways drift before, but it was euphoric!

The ice course was crazy challenging, because every little thing you do on ice is amplified it really teaches you how to maintain a positive throttle... or fly out of control! I was surprised that the AWD cars actually had the hardest time, they could get up to speed faster, but in the corners when they try to maintain a positive throttle for steering the rear wheels are pushing as well so it would send to spin them out way more often.

My favorite parts of the course was the emergency braking and the high speed 360 degree spin without losing control. So much fun!

Anyway, I did not get a chance to take too many pictures myself. I barley got any other cars, there were about 30 cars there in total. But there was a professional photographer on site who snapped a lot of the action shots of everybody... so much better and clearer action pictures to come! (maybe a few days though)

enjoy:

Hey,

There's also a little write up in the local section about the day:
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/grea...chool-who.html

It was so much fun playing and getting to know the car. There was discussion of another day, heck some were talking of heading out this coming weekend on their own and setting up a course. Incredible how much traction winter tyres get on ice (when you want it ).

Nice. Can't do that in my area.

Hey, If F1 racers can drive on ice-

Then why not your Fit. Hope the ice is "thick" enough.

Hey, put some power down-

Or try this if you get tired of sliding around in the winter-

Third and last installment of Reijo's awesome winter driving school.
Same fun format, slightly different courses (same constant radius circle though).
Only 14 students in the end, so tonnes of seat time (I used up over twice the amount of fuel as the last course) A the end of the day we put the two main courses together into one big course and ripped around until 6:30pm and almost full dark. In the two stitched together slalom's we were getting up to 100km/h. One of the instructors, Kyle, and I took turns driving the Fit and timing eachother. I wasn't doing too badly against his times, but still have some work to do on consistency and always looking ahead to position the car properly.
Good link mentioning some things I was working on that I found afterward;
