Go to TireRack.com and check their performance tests and customer reviews. The best check is the lap times comparisons of times in the wet and the tire ratings in snow and ice. You can pick the characteristics you like and naturally pick the ones with the highest wear ratings for tire life.
Generally you'll have to compromise between wear, lite snow/wet, and price.
Note that both specific Michelin and Bridgestone's All-Season tires were rated higher than the Avids but price is nearly doubled. And the wear ratings ... And size availability ... And ride quietness ... The Avids might just be a winner. For winter weather in the western NC region you may want to consider 195/50x16 . Its a little taller and narrower, which is best in snow and wet.
good luck. We had very good performance from our 'icebears' last winter in the Grandfather Mountain area but any on the list at DiscountTireDirect have good reputations..
