'16 Fit AC cutting out when idling...
Hi there. We just bought a 2016 Honda Fit with 70,000 miles on it. The AC blows cold, but at low speeds and at when idling, the AC will start blowing warm air. Then if you go back up to highway speeds, the AC starts blowing cold air again.
I had a very similar issue with my 2016 Subaru WRX where it would only blow cold air when accelerating but would start blowing warm while cruising at a constant speed--it turned out to be a faulty compressor.
It is frustrating because sometimes the Fit WILL blow cold when idling. In fact, when my wife reported the issue to me, and I tried to reproduce it on the driveway, I thought she was mistaken and hadn't switched on the AC since I could not reproduce the issue.
We took it to the dealer (we have an extended warranty thankfully), and they could not reproduce the issue, even after leaving it idling for 30 minutes. They also checked the charge level and checked for leaks and found no problems. Extremely frustrating to say the least.
Next time this happens, I am driving right to the dealer and see if I can get warm air to blow in front of them.
Any ideas on the culprit?
TIA
BTW I don't think it can be icing over, since it will start blowing warm from initial start. Also, it will go from blowing warm to very cold just by taking it up to highway speeds--with no changes to the settings or anything else.

I've had this issue on a couple of cars, and both times it happened to be the radiator fan not coming on when the A/C is on. The fan is required to move air over the coils to cool them off. When you're driving on the highway, the fan is unnecessary because plenty of air is moving over the coils. But when you stop, so does the air flow. Thus, the fan turns on and keeps air moving over the coils.
Good news is this is easy to check. Just pop the hood, observe the van not running, then turn on the A/C. The fan should turn on. If not, that would explain why it only gets warm when you stop. The next question then is why isn't it spinning? That could be a bad fan, or just whatever tells the fan to turn on has failed. The mechanic, or dealer, would have to sort that out.

I think this is kind of normal for Fits. I have a 2013, bought used in 2014 & have always had this issue. One way to kinda stop it is to run the A/C in 're-circulate". Stays cooler that way. It just does it when driving & especially hot days, like here in Phoenix. When you're on the road or freeway, no problems.
