finally beat 40 mpg!!

well, i give major kudos to everyone on the forums that encourage low octane gas, because it just gave me an average of 42 mpg on my last tank.
i was initially scared to give regular 87 a try over several tanks, because my dad is an old-school car guy and told me to always put premium in. but alas, i gave in to fitfreak pressure
i still am not happy about how much more poorly the car feels on regular, but i may keep up with it for this kind of mileage.

Nice, nice.
I am hitting up a long road trip next weekend, I want to shoot for the big 40, but my around town tanks with the HFP wheel and summer tires is between 34 and 35. Switching to the stockers before I head out for the roadtrip. How fast do you cruise on the freeway?

i usually go about 65-70 (65 being the speed limit in that area). would go faster, but the stretch i go through is going through some major construction, so it's hard to get around the slow moving semis
also, cops are hiding out EVERYWHERE in that stretch as well.my previous milage has been really weird. started out at 26 mpg, then went up to 31, then went up to 37, and now 42. that's over the course of 8 months. thankfully it's gone up, not down.
it might be how much you press the pedal. even though rpms may be low and speed isnt that much if you are agressive in speeding up to the speed limit and slowdown fast then you use up gas. maybe not so much in slowing down but still smooth and steady is key.
93 octane
I am currently using 93 octane from either Shell or BP or Mobile and my average FE is 42-44mpg. The lowest I've had since I've been keeping track is 38mpg. It has a rather high compression ratio (10.?:1 I can't remember exactly, but I know its in the 10's) and that's why I chose to put premium in it. I drive about half highway and half city/country roads. I've increased my tire pressure to ~40psi front and rear. I have blocked off the upper grill section and I have a ScanGauge2. Maybe I'll try 87 for a three or four tanks and see if there is any changes in FE.

i only heavily accelerate when passing on the highway.
i find it odd that my mileage keeps increasing in jumps like it does. i remember when i was ecstatic because i broke 30 mpg, haha.
"Granny-style" is the way to go! :]
Wow that is really stange? Maybe you drive it less agressive every time? Which is a good thing, i wish i could keep the RPMs under 3000 all the time lol..
now that's some good mileage!!!

mpg
For the first 15,000 on my car I was averaging 34 mpg. I'm at 24,000 and average 35-36. I've hit the big 40 on mostly highway. I drive a mix of 70% highway 30% city. Also, a mixture of aggressive and grandma driving... depending on the music that's playing on the radio.
