Whacky gas guage... anyone else?

so i've noticed on my fit, i could go 100 miles on a full tank of gas, and have the guage still say it's full. usually around 75-100 miles is when the dial dips below full.
then, all of a sudden my gauge shoots down almost to half a tank in the next 75-100 miles. after that, if i have half a tank, that's only honest for about 75 to another 100 miles. what gives?
anyone else gave this happening to them?

Well on a different thing, my gas gauge is kinda weird, but dunno if its messed up also.
during the fill up, i put in a 5 in the gas, and the needle doesnt move, but when i put in another 5,then it gives me an entire half tank.
also when i fill it up to the max, the needle doesnt go to max, but after some hard braking/nose dive, or basically so the trunk is lifted up a bit, the gas needle then will go way more then full. yeah, now i fill my gas up on curved stations where my front will be tilted down so i can get that extra few drops of gas to run about another 2 miles.

Yeah it was so much fun.... for about 4 days until they got swept by the Rockies.

many cars have non linear gas gauges
you just get used to it and know your car and adjust accordingly.
our grand am uses at least 1/4 tank bafore the needle moves toward empty then by 1/2 tank on the gauge it has maybe 1/8 tank left.
I go crazy when people tel me stories about their mpg when they are guessing on a one tank trip. you really need at least 3 tanks or more to get any where near accurate.
back in 1983 I spent almost a year traveling across the country in my 1965 vw bus I had several pages of gas fill ups and several thousand miles
result was 22 mpg. my current 67 vw bus gets about 19 mpg ,all around town driving

As others have said, pretty typical for cars:
Most cars don't measure from Full to Empty, they measure the *middle* 3/4 or so.
If we assume the fit has a 10 gallon tank (yes I know it's really 10.8...), it might read Full at 9 and Empty at 1 or so, so the needle wouldn't even start moving down until you hit 9 gallons, and would read empty with still 1 gallon in the tank. (F to E = 8 real gallons in this example). Don't know what the range for the Fit is, but you get the idea....
Reasons for this:
1) They sure don't want you to run out of gas while still having a reading, so E is labeled very conservatively.
2) (guessing here) Show full even if tank isn't *really* full to avoid people trying to squeeze every last drop they can into the tank and possibly damaging emissions equipment. Since pumps vary in how sensitive they are when shutting off, they're making sure that if you finish filling when the pump clicks off, the gas gauge shows Full and you can drive off happy. (it would be annoying otherwise, wouldn't it??)
