sport vs base
Ideally, I would like to have had a Fit that had all (or most) of the Sport features without the body kit bits. I can't say if there's any real aero benefits to the skirts/dam/spoiler, but there definitely IS a weight penalty. For what I want to do - mostly in-city scoot about and some autoX - the Sport was the way to go. The tiny wheels/tires on the Base were just too much of a penalty when it comes to stock-class autoX, and spending big $$$ to play in one of the prepared or modified classes is contrary to what I wanted to do. No regrets, just didn't need those extra "features".
I choose the base because i have no choice when i got mine, being one of the few lucky fit owner (april 15,2006) i would like to get the sport manual but theres none available on all the dealership that i went to,i went to 4 dealership,i dont want to wait nor i dont want to be in the waiting list.
The good part was i paid mine on MSRP,i installed my own foglights, keyless entry,& aux jack for mp3,i did not install cruise control because theres no available kit yet as of april 2006,
Its all blood & sweat to install coz i did everything with the guidance of fellow fit freak members every time i encountered problems.
If i will buy again i will choose sport without a doubt coz the installation of aux jack, foglights and keyless entry were not easy, and i dont even have a cruise control yet,
So in my opinion if you have time & skill to install the aux jack, foglights, keyless entry & cruise control by yourself ,base is not a bad choice.

We got the base. It was available when we needed a car. They had one in the right color.
I like the Sport and maybe I could have waited for one but this is mostly my S.O.'s car and she saw no reason to get any of the Sport's extras for the additional cost. (Our other car is our primary traveler and it has all the good stuff). She wanted power windows and locks. (Base has them). She wanted an automatic. She really didn't get what paddle shifters were all about. :-)
We did put in a remote keyless as she wanted that, an easy plug in extra.
I think they are both great cars. One must decide for themselves what "extras" are important, what they are worth, or if they can add on things later. We use our Fit for just running around town, we have no iPod, so some of the Sport extras just didn't matter.
I really think, if you want the options, that the Sport's extra price is a bargain in today's world of inflated car prices. I have no problems with those who think the Sport is the better deal.
Just my $ .02

i originally was set on a base VBP auto, and i called the dealer and said "this is what i want. i don't want a sport, i only want blue, and i would like for you to order it for me."
he said "sure we can order it, but how about you come in anyways and test drive one we have on the lot?"
needless to say, i went home the next day with a sport MR auto, haha. for me, the price difference was negligible for the amount of goodies that came extra.

I picked the Sport because like others have mentioned the features you get for the price is a total bargain. Try and piece together a comparably equipped Versa or Yaris. Look at the price tag - for me, when the dust settled from the dealers' estimates, I was practically begging Honda for a Fit Sport, they didn't have to try and sell me any so called "accessory package" - it was all there in the Fit Sport - I knew buying that I would be missing out on anything because it was everything available for the Fit (with the exception of the HFP stuff and interior add ons, but the big things were all there)
I'd have loved to have seen the 15" alloys bumped up to a 16", same design just larger, but other then that, the underbody kit is tasteful and gives it just enough character.
My girlfriend loves it because it's cute; I love it because it has some aggressiveness/sportiness to it; we both love it because its the best mix of form and function. I honestly think it's the ultimate roadtrip car for budget-minded/enviromental friendly travelers. Low emissions, very versatile and comfy interior and the right kind of real world amenties without useless add-ons. The aux jack is great because I can plug in almost any device that has a soundcard (laptop, mp3, cd player, etc.) and the cruise control is probably the best i've experienced. There's a cupholder ideally located for all 5 passengers - plenty of useful pockets/spaces. I can put my phone and wallet in close by spots for easy access for calls, tolls, etc. i even forget that I don't have a really coin holder spot. Reading MP3s is key - because I like to just make one CD with tons of music on it, and the fact I can navigate the files/folders with this OEM stereo is great, and without having to reach far from the steering wheel.
The transmission is definitely what I'd say is best in class. Everything else just seems clunky and loose compared to what you get from the OEM Shifter. Get the Mugen one and it's heaven... the Skunk2 kit also does a decent job of perfecting something that's already great.
Foglights are plus on those long backroad night drives.
And yes - most of these I could have gotten aftermarket for less and installed them, but there's just nothing like OEM - it was meant to fit and I'm not messing around with anything. Not that I don't like tinkering, I've been at it with this car since day one, but for the money, it saved me alot of time and effort that I can spend on bigger and better things to make the Fit Sport even more then what it is from the factory.
Anyway that's my 2 cents.
I think that if a Sport model isn't available, but a Base is, and you can deal with a few less features, it's perfect. And honestly, if they had the VBP 5-speed at my dealer as a Base model, I'd probably have driven it off instead and been just as happy and none the wiser. It just so happened the only one they had in the color I wanted was a Sport. But once you test drive a Sport versus a Base, I think you'll want it just knowing those things will be there if you need them :-) just my opinion...

That's pretty darn true, it's funny how honda made it so difficult to decide for me because the sport option package is such a good price, but the price for the base fit was that much better. . .(!)
In '06, Honda Canada was charging an additional $200 for the cruise control on the LX. The base price on the LX was $17,100...later they just included the cruise control on the LX and started charging $17,300 as the base price.
I have been hunting high and low for someone who successfully had Cruise Control installed in a Base model Fit.
I prefer the Base over the Sport because I drive on some bumpy rutted roads and the Sport has all the lower trim which will probably get damaged on a pothole sooner or later.
What was the approximate cost of your cruise control installation and has it been reliable? In a previous post you mentioned a part you weren't sure where to install. Where did you end up puttting it?
Thanks for your help!
Carolyn
i got the Sport over the Base because i thought the base looked to similar to Aveo's. That and cruise control was a nice feature that i wanted. If i were to do it again, i think i'd get a base this time because with the money you save, you can definately buy better things that you're going to replace in the sport anyway such as wheels, kit, sound system etc.
I personally think Honda should have stuck with the models of all their products(EX THE RIDGELINE).
This is how it should be.
Fit DX, LX, EX, EX-S
DX should be base, like the Civic. black handles + mirrors to disinguish it from the LX.
LX should get body-colored door handles + mirrors, cruise + AUX like in CANADA.
EX should be loaded (W/O LEATHER) and with rims; without the body kit.
EX-S should have everything with the body kit and maybe sportier rims.
ANOTHER THING TO ADD.
U.S Fits should have more interior colors, such as gray + tan.
Maybe on the upper models it should have a more "PREMIUM" cloth/mesh seats.

I have to admit I felt some envy at times when I first purchased my base Fit. I came to some realization that my Fit has it's one distinctive character over the sport Fits....maybe just another way for me to feel better about my base Fit. After a month, I def felt 100% confident about my Fit and love every minute of driving it. My biggest pro for the base is that it's lighter the than the sport and less drag in aerodynamic also IMO. Things I've upgraded: tinted windows, installed the fob key, replaced the crappy speakers with 3 way sony speakers, installed all weather mats, HPF wheels and the rest on my sig. The next time you complain about your speakers, pull off your door panels and you'll see if 200 watts of power is worth producing sounds on those crappy ass speakers. Honda didn't do their homework when it came to speakers for the Fit. Maybe it may just be on the base, but I have a feeling it's the same for the sport model.

For us, base was definitely the way to go. Unless we get well out outside of DC, cruise control is useless - too much traffic even on the highways. We had an aux port on another car and used it maybe 3 times. If you want your own tunes, just burn your own CD. CDs are cheap, every computer can make a music CD, and it only takes 5-10 minutes to burn one. How many CDs can I burn for the time it would take to do the aux install??
I added the keyless entry myself. Only took 1/2 hour but could have done it in less if I had known that the keyless won't lock the doors if they're open. Spent an additional 10 min rechecking all the connectors. It was a much better deal than paying the dealer - they wanted over $400.

Base versus sport
I picked the base model over the sport even tho I had to order it. Auto sports were in stock but no base manuals (necessary in the Rockies due to different gear ratios). Reason for the base:1. Body kits are removed by snow and ice where I live. I have ripped off two Miata front air dams.
2. The remote lock is easy and fairly cheap to install.
3. I will be getting an extra set of wheels for winter tires and keep the new set (alloys) for the majority of the year.
4. I have fast cars besides the Fit so the looks was not as important (personal preference)
5. Cruise control is seldom used in the mountains.
6. I burn CD's or use the Ipod setup.
7. I would rather use the money to buy better floor mats.
Either model is great and maybe the sports model has a better resale value but only time will tell. Enjoy what ever you select.

I would really have preferred that the base and sport would have come with the same size wheels... as long as they were both the same as the Sport. Then I would have gotten the base for sure, although the color selection played in to my decision, too. Since there's no real difference in the suspension from Sport to Base - other than wheels - all the GFX and extra content is just extra weight from a performance perspective.
In an ideal world, there would be a DX-S version that would have the very least amount of equipment with a rear sway bar, beefier front sway, upgraded shocks/struts, and 15x7 wheels... That would be a little H-Stock weapon. Since there isn't such animal, I chose the Sport.
BTW, morganplus4, I'll be in Evergreen tomorrow visiting a friend of mine from the Barracuda Owner's Group. Does your username imply that you've got one of those little jewels? The hotrodder in me craves a +8, but I suspect that a +4 would be more than sufficient in the real world...

i chose the base model because i knew i would be upgrading a lot of the things the sport comes with that the base doesn't. like wheels, lip kit, etc. i recently purchased the OEM sport front lip and sideskirts. i think the base model with the sport lips looks great. i think the lack of foglights makes it look better. i will probably get the mugen replica rear lip and an aftermarket wing. i can't decide between the two different mugen wings or the spoon wing.
the only thing that i wish i had from the sport was the keyless entry. but that is only a little over $100 online and installation looks pretty straight-forward.
i will post pics of my base with the sport lip kit as soon as i get the sideskirts on.

Base was better price for me
As a college student, I couldn't pass up when they had a special deal for one base Fit being $14000 out the door, with splash guards, all season mats, keyless entry, and a trunk tray included. It was the only one there, and it almost got sold, until the lady went to look at the yaris across the street to compare. So I couldn't pass up on that kind of deal, or else I would have settled for a Sport. As for the sport model's bodykit here, its nice, but I think I like the European Sports model bodykit even better.
Right on. It's funny but I didn't notice the 1mph increment feature until I installed a GPS. This particular model displays vehicle speed and elevation in digital format. Every time you hit the Accel/Decel buttons, it does actually go up or down by exactly 1mph. Pretty cool.
