Yeah, I understand. Any dark color is going to show swirls more than a lighter color. And I was wrong in my post, they are base under clear (obviously), not over clear - like any two-stage paint.

hahaha i knew what you meant. although that would be funny if someone read that and tried shooting their car with clear, then base coat. gotta protect that clear coat with the base coat!!

dont mean to jack the thread, but since there is someone that also knows about auto paint, have you heard of someone using flattener in the clear over a black base coat to create a "satin black" look? ive heard of people doing this, but im not too convinced that it would turn out well. anyone have experience with this method? probably not.

I'm no expert, just have painted only a handful of my own cars (just Miatas) the past few years in my home garage using a cheap $200 paint gun and a 60g air-compressor. I've done two single stage paint jobs (acrylic urethane), and one two-stage paint (metallic paint and cleared) - man shooting a metallic and then a clear is tough. I love shooting single stage acrylic urethane (even did my laptop lid!).

As far as people using flattener in their clear over a black basecoat, I have no idea. My paint knowledge is strictly related to PPG paints and nothing else (I am truly an amateur enthusiast). Though I imagine that putting a flatterner in a clear (over black) would look like a shiny "re-entry black," sort of like an old black Merkur Scorpio.
