Where does the power go after 40?

The Fit seems zippy around town, however, the feel of acceleration is lost once merging onto the highway. Is this just because of wind resistance or low torque numbers?

It has to do with you only have a 1.5 liter 109 hp and 105 lb-ft. of toruque.

Guessing 0.4 Cd and 25 square feet frontal area, at 55mph, you lose approximately 15 horsepower to aerodynamic drag. At 70, more like 28hp, nearly a third of what power it can send to the wheels.

Actually it's all in the gearing. It is optimized to feel zippy at lower speeds and of course because of the lower power output of the engine, it loses that zippy feel in the higher gears

Yeah, you just don't have much power at highway speeds. You just have to deal with it. I got used to the lack of power in my mom's Prius, where the CVT pretty much resists any change in momentum at all.

No worries, I was just curious. It would be nice if it pulled on the interstate the way it does in town!

Wait, this implies you have power BEFORE 40.

Ha. Well, you know what I mean, the feeling that there's something going on, albeit a little something, when you push on the gas. Waking up the hamster on his wheel when you're driving around town. However, the hamster seems to all but disappear once you get on the interstate.

At least if you have a 5MT, think of the gearing as a life cycle.

1st gear : just a toddler, just gettin' going
2nd gear : catching up to the rents, growing up so fast
3rd gear : mid 20's, prime of your life
4th gear : past your prime, but still kickin' (mid-life crisis)
5th gear : better go buy a cane, there, Grandpa

Into a box in the spare tire well. Its pushed into this box preventing it from getting to the motor.

Ive always thought the Fit is really quick at highways speeds. The trick is to not floor it. It picks up speed faster at 1/4 and 1/2 throttle after 40-50mph. Probably because its running nice an lean.

I don't know, at 40 mph I have no issue whatsoever getting up to a reasonable speed when merging or otherwise if I keep it in 3rd. Obviously it won't push you back in your seat, but I've never really felt that the powertrain was THAT slow to respond if you use the gears to your advantage.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you are trying to accelerate in the higher gears. SHIFT DOWN TIL YOUR RPM IS 4000 OR MORE AND SEE IF THAT DOESN'T HELP.The upper two gears are real tall, for mpg at cruise, especially if you have an automatic. Auto 3rd is good to 90 mph.
But these other guys are right, too. It ain't no 396 Yenko Chevelle.

Purpose for fit was not speed.

I really miss the punch my 06 Modded WRX had---but being that gas is getting so exspensive--I could care less for the power.

one thing the fit is a champ in handling
