Well I don't think it's based soley on mileage, but I think mileage is the biggest key in it. But engine revs and how they relate to the miles you've driven, etc. I still don't trust it and have been doing changes at 3000 miles anyways.

It does not go by mileage alone. I have had mine long enough to tell you that I have gone more mileage and less mileage between oil changes (before it went to 15 percent on the Maintenance Minder). The SI has the same system, I believe all Hondas have it.

Reading my shop manual leads me to suspect that the computer calculates the % oil left based on miles and rpm. The oil left reading seenms to go down more on track days than street days.
Don't depend on the gage alone to change oil and filter. Change synthetics and filter at low reading or 5000-6000 mi max; change conventional oils and fiklter at 3000-3500 max or low gage reading whichever happens first.

oil change intervals

It goes by two things. Mileage is one, the other is by temprature. Rather, how much of your driving is short distance.

Think of it this way. If your drive was 3 miles to work, you would have 10 short distance cold cycles a week. You would be changine your oil with less miles on it than someone who drove 40 miles each way. Your oil does not get hot enough to burn off any contaminates, the maintenance minder takes this into consideration.

How bout we start a thread on when we change our oil per the maintenance minder. Most of my trips are longer. Not many short cold oil trips. I have over 6400 miles and 30% oil life left. I will see if I can start a poll on here.

I, too, enjoy throwing away money.

Honda obviously has no idea what they're doing. As it turns out, all their engineers who designed, built, and tested the engine were in the middle of an acid binge, so they can't really be trusted.
