MPG normal? And another question

New Fit owner as of June. My first car so I'm a very new to all this.

I posted a few days ago about a rattling noise and will be bringing it in this week but wonder if I should mention the following when I bring it in:

When i got the car in early June here were 13 miles on it and I got it with a full tank of gas. Yesterday the tank was well below 1/4 but not quite at the E yet and there are 116 miles on the car. I drive to and from work every day which is 1.2 miles away in all street, stop and go, slow as hell NYC traffic with the AC on. Is this normal mileage for these horrid conditions?

Another odd thing (which may be normal but I don't know) is if I am standing outside the car and it's running, I can hear it idling. A minute or so later it sounds like it has stopped. It hasn't but has just gotten very very quiet. Then 30 seconds later it kicks up again, then down again. Is this odd?

Like I said, I'm taking it in for the rattling issue this week and would like to mention these things if they are abnormal.

Thanks.

the mileage is pretty bad, rattles are never good, even in stop and go traffic with the ac on you should be able to get 20 mpg or better

as for the idle.. that's just your fan ;-P when you can hardly hear it THAT'S idling, the fan kicks on quite often in our cars, I think that it's because our engine bay is pretty hot.

AT or MT fit? reportedly, AT fits in traffic like that usually get 24-26 mpg once broken in

mt fits will probably get 26-30 mpg in traffic like that

WOW that is horrendous mpg. My first tank was 26 mpg and I wanted to cry. I would be pissed if I got that on my first tank. Move out of NY.

yeah, but you know his 1.2 miles probably takes 15 minutes, so that's 13 1/2 minutes of basically idling per 1.2 miles that you have to throw into the equation

to the guys with scangauges, how much gas is used for an hour of idling?

I’m at 1500 miles now and have been getting around 27 mpg. My first tank was like 20 if I remember right. I blame my mileage right now on the sticky tires (mpg should improve as they ware) and the fact that I only drive 5 miles to work and the car never really gets warmed up to the point where it would be pulling better mpg.

2nd tank = 34
3rd tank = 37

Must be something wrong with your car OR you are flying down the freeway at 100 mph

Funny that you mention that. I've had the car one month today and it has not been on any highway yet, just taking me to work everyday and driving via the streets to the local supermarket.

It's an Automatic Sport to the person who asked.

Here's a quick fix, how about walking/biking to work and saving the Fit for longer trips? I'd love to be able to walk to work...but it's 40 miles away for me.

I bought a scangauge a few days ago, and I still use the A/C since I don't believe it make a big impact. What I have done is slowed down on the highway some and made liberal use of the cruise control on not-so-busy city streets (40 mph or so), and it seems that my current tank of gas is going further than usual.

I checked out what the car does at 80 on the freeway, and I think the instant MPG readout hovered anywhere from 27-34 mpg. It's much better closer to 60-70 mph.

Talking mpg

I've had my Fit (NHBP Sport MT) for 3 weeks now and though I know this is NOT the most scientific equation for mpg this is what I've gotten...

1st Tank=372 miles
2nd Tank=359 miles
3rd Tank=410 miles

1.2 miles?
Seriously, I don't use my car and I live 17 miles from work.
I ride my bicycle.
I would walk 1.2 miles if I had no bike.

I'd love to walk or bike to work too but the load of equipment I have to take to and fro prevents me from doing that.

For some reason when I read this I pictured you walking down the street with a giant afro in your hands. Just had to mention this. Off topic i know.
