so..this is how my car is doing so far

277.3 miles to 9.597 gallons..My dad checked my tires and they are off..they vary int eh 30's...So tom Im going to fill up my tires to whaT? what do you guys recomend?

Now my driving for this was shifting aroung 2500 since shifting lower takes to long for the car to get speed from a stop and highway I did 70 sometimes pushed a bit more to pass someone...

Even when I would go no higher than 60 and shift at 2k I would get around the same...So wtf...How cna I drasticly improve my gas mileage?

And what sthe equation to figuring out what my MPG is?

thanks alot

I would start with sidewall max for the psig in your tires.

As for techniques:

Slow acceleration
shift at 2k
DWB
FAS
P&G

Oh, and check out cleanmpg.com

I have to disagree and would not recommend inflating your tires to the maximum pressure. I would inflate them to the recommended pressure of 32psi...or even 34-47psi if you really want to. but there isn't much you can do to DRASTICALLY increase your fuel economy. unless you want to take drastic measures.

all my tires were lower than I thought.I put them about 35psi..

Im going on a 700+ road trip this weekend (can my honda fit take it?) and before I leave i will put the tires a 35 again.I will be driving 80 with cruise on the whole way..

And ill check out cleanmpg.com..and what does each term you wrote mean?(talking to the guy above you!)

read my post...but again.shifting at 2 k gave me the same results as shifting higher..maybe 5-10 miles more..but I also drove 65 tops...so yea I drive better and get 5-10 miles more..thats nothing

technique is key here. 2k works fine, you just need to not accelerate fast. The key to better mpg is slow. Slow speed, slow acceleration, slowing down before you typically do. I shift at 2k on a daily basis on my 58mile commute to work with nothing but hills the whole way I can get 65mpg. Check out cleanmpg.com. Don't take my word for it, try it(more than once it takes practice) and read more about it at other forums. This place is full of negative feed back and Wrong information. You will not get great mpg first try because it takes lots of practice to unlearn what you do and know.

It is your driving style, doing 70mph will not help you get better gas mileage even if you're shifting at 2500 rpms.Try doing 50mph or nothing more than 55mph to see increase in your mpg.

If I shift at 2k rpm, everyone behind me is going to put my head on a stick. I refuse to take 5 minutes to reach the speed limit. I value my life in a crowded city. Really the Fit is slow enough shifting at 3000-3200rpm. I only shift at 2k if I'm the only one around.

You will have to run your car below the speed limit to increase your cars' mpg. To compute your mpg is 277.3÷9.597= 28.89mpg

It is all in what you want to achieve. Better mpg can be had. Do you need better mpg? or Do you want it? I do it for several reasons: for the hell of it(how high can I go?), It does piss me off every time I get gas, because of the gas prices(why can't they make the car fast and get great mpg???).

ok question..Ill be driving from Ft laudy to tally..Thats roughly 700 miles each way...since I will be sticking to pure highway will my mpg go up? mind you I wanna get there before the world ends so I think Ill top out at 80 and hit cruise control..

how should I set my tires?

So....i finally filled up today about 9 gallons after a week or just plain wreckless and wastefull driving. Well at least 75% of the time. The other 25% was highway driving so i try not to get arrested for felony speeding.
1 word described my experience at the pump. Dumbfounded. I still averaged 25 mpg...lol. I MEAN WTF does it take to get this thingn to go below 20mpg?
I guess my friend didn't lie when he said he still got 24mpg when he tracked his car at Streets of Willow. Simply amazing.

Although i will have to say, i tend to get lower mpg's if i fill up earlier (say before half a tank is drained). I wonder why that is...?

So now i'm up on premium fuel, tires aired up to 48/50psi front/rear, K&N air filter, and reset the ECU. I'll drive eco friendly on this tank and see if it all makes a difference.

Highway is good.
If the terrain is fairly flat on your whole highway trip, driving even 75-80 is not an issue. As long as you're only driving yourself and some lightweight luggage.
I easily hit 38mpg driving 75mph with the a/c on and outside temp at 94 degrees in cali.
Tires were up at 42/38psi at the time. If you raise it more, you'll have even less rolling resistance.

Yeah 40 all around will be the safe way to go. And you'll preserve some ride comfort at the same time - also gaining responsiveness.

Also remember that this engine doesnt have torque. If you keep shifting early but still gassing it somewhat hard, you end up lugging and that actually lowers your FE. I'm sure this is something you can sense, but some people get too worried about shifting at low rpms, they forget that sometimes its better to shift a little higher.

I'm confused about techniques myself. I have an AT and I usually feather the pedal in order to get the engine to shift before 3K rpm. Been averaging about 28-29mpg during every fill up.

During my last tank I did a lot of uphill driving through the canyons and used the paddle shifters. RPMS were high and I was sure that my MPG would suffer, but I averaged 30, higher than what I usually get.

My highest was 32mpg and that was with 5 people in the car the entire time, stop and go traffic/highway, 100 degree weather with AC on! I'm not sure what's going on. Guess my car likes it better when I punch it.

below 80 is best. beyond 80 and the car really starts to stress against wind resistance.

when i drove my trip i was going about 78 on average. I dont like to wait to refill, but in the end 11 gallons got me 420 miles.
