Sheesh!!! Boy, that little Fit sure bounced around. I watched that footage and I am sure glad I wasn't the dummy in that test!

I sure wouldn't like to be inside either but at least you would walk away alive (just a bit shaken up).

Same can't be said for vehicles like the Hyundai Getz which are not only dangerous to the occupants but pedestrians as well. I'd kind of like to keep my legs.

Difference between a 15 year old+ car in an accident and a modern small car.

This one might of had better fuel economy but I'd be looking to more important things.

From the look of that picture that's probably a pretty old economy car model.

With the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP) authorities doing independent crash testing in the last 4-5 years, today's small cars are far more likely to survive that crash your picture depicted. Indeed, the 2006 Civic sedan would likely not have crumpled like that even when hit by that big truck.

Yes but you have to note the integrity of the passenger portion of the vehicle - it's actually quite impressive - you should see the same test with a full size Ford F-150 that was on NBC's Dateline -
The F-150 driver and passenger would have been killed or wishing they were
I'd rather be in the Fit and take a tossing.

Wow, I couldn't believe that road train! FOUR trailers! The most we ever see here is 2 trailers, and that is not very common; usually it's just one.

The road trains up north western Queensland and the Northern Territory are all 3 or 4 bogeys. They have absolute right of way sitting on 100km/hr all day with thousands of kilometers between destinations. That tanker is a 53 meter long, 115 tonne, 86 wheeler.

The Fit is very safe for a small car, I'd say its probably the safest car of its type.

I am very concerned about safety too, but I refuse to drive a lard barge SUV and jeopardize everyone ELSES safety and the planet for my own to indulge selfish insecurities.

The Fit is tough to beat for safety in its class and I'd even go as far as to say you'd probably be safer in a Fit than in some of the compact cars that are a bit larger (Hyundai I'm looking in your direction)

There's a thread on honda tech right now, this guy in a Fit got rear-ended by some idiot going 55. He made it out okay. That's pretty good for a 2400lb car, if you ask me!

Holy time warp bat man.

Modern technology has given small cars like the Fit a very high safety advantage over cars like the Geo Metro.

Wow, interesting how this thread got revived after more than 2 years of dormancy.

Here the answer to the thread's question, just for the heck of it:
IIHS-HLDI: Honda Fit
IIHS-HLDI: Honda Fit

Five star crash ratings for its category, no? Also the Fit has a feature that when there's a frontal impact, the engine drops so it doesn't come colliding through the dashboard, doesn't it?

Well, I guess with the addition of DOT glass and all the structural bumper additions...

Most engines are designed to crush to act as a cushion. thats probably what the fit's does

The thing you need to look for it deformity in the passenger compartment, there isnt any on the fit which is VERY very good, which means no dashboard in the chest, or steering wheel to the head.

bigger cars arnt better anymore with new technology.

Example... this GM mini-van manufactured until 2006
YouTube - Pontiac Montana Crash Test Video (IIHS)

You wanna be the soccer mom in that van anymore?

Remember that crash test results are only comparable within the same class, so the Fit is a very safe car for a subcompact, but I highly doubt it is *safer* than a well-designed larger car.

If I got into an accident with a Tahoe I'd probably not be a happy camper no matter how many stars the Fit gets.
