Is the ultra-cheap carpetting really so necessary?

I was able to fully inspect (inside/out) a Sport model this past Thursday. I was generally impressed with the quality of the materials aside from one blatant exception: the interior carpetting.

In all my life, I have never seen such a disapointing choice of material for carpetting. It looks and feels like utter crap! It's so bloody thin! It makes my base '91 Civic's carpet look like it came out of a Rolls. How much economies of scale can this poor choice generate for Honda? I guess they're hoping that nobody will notice. Wrong!

Shame on you Honda for letting the bean counters decide what is essentially part of a vehicle's inner epidermis! I hope the 2008 model rectifies this visual/tactile attrocity.

Yeah for sure I noticed. Very disappointing.

Either they put better quality carpet or they go with a rubber floor like the Element.

Exclamation

My 2002 CRV has the same crap and it doesn't wear all to well either - I'm putting down the form fitted factory all weather matt set ASAP when my fitster comes in!
All my older Hondas (most previous a 2000CRV) had much better carpet - chalk it up to cost control I quess

I think I'll wait for MacNeil Automotive Products to have their Classic Premium rubber mats available in a model specifically designed for the Honda Fit.

By the way, I got a reply from MacNeil Automotive and they told me that the Classic Premium mats are not yet available for the Fit, but they are hoping to have them available by June 2006 at latest.

I'm sure when the Honda design team was sitting around looking at the carpeting they didn't envision rich old ladies putting dainty bags from Sachs in the back. My Fit is going to have duffle bags, smelly fishing gear, dirty bike wheels, etc.

What, are you going to bring out the vacuum cleaner after every trip?
And I'm going to cover it with cargo mats, anyway.

Yeah. Why? Is that not normal?

I noticed the carpet too while at the dealer but I always use floor mats in my cars so it did not bother me much. I was so impressed by the seats and instrument layout that I forgive Honda for this. I bet the bean counters at Honda were thinking along the same lines as myself. I just wish more low priced new cars had interiors that looked this good. I did find it somewhat strange that the glovebox door seems very heavy and drops rapidly once the latch is released.

However the carpet is, it isn't poor enough to have caught my attention yesterday. I'll check it out specifically next time.

It looks like the sound insulation that goes under carpet in most other vehicles. It doesn't look like carpet. I ordered the factory floor mats to cover it. I found them online at a dealer in Ohio for half what my dealer wanted.

I also found a factory retractable cargo cover.

Who did you buy from in Ohio? After market or Honda dealer? I just got mine and want the same accessories.

I bought from College Hills Honda, http://collegehillshonda.com/. My dealer couldn't/wouldn't match their prices.

the stock carpet it has a rubber layer and a foam for sound deadening which is not bad.

You brought a 10-month old thread back from the dead.

The stock carpet makes me want to throw up. If it wasn't for the massive curves, I would try and make a new carpet set altogether. Perhaps they could have gone the tupperware route similar to the Element and really cheesed out.

The factory velour or whatever is on the seats is horrible, as well as the backside of the backseat. They hold lint, dust, and anything in them way to much. THAT's why I'm changing to a two tone suede interior.

Honestly, almost the entire interior is sub par compared to my current '90 Civic sedan. The dash/door panels/center console in the Fit are all made of much cheaper plastic and most small trim parts are also not a well made as they were nearly 20 years ago. The carpet was also a huge disapointment when my Fit was delivered as is the quality and blatent rip off pricing of most accessories (even when ordered from College Hills Honda). I worked for a Honda dealer back in the 90s as a Parts manager and after seeing and driving lots of Honda vehicles over the years the Fit is quite a let down in the fit and finish department. I understand it's very inexpensive and the lowest Honda on the food chain here in the USA but I'd gladly pay an extra $100 or $200 to have higher quality materials used through out.

I bought the carpets, and they honestly suck. i had to buy some random carpets to cover my $114 carpets because they started wearing off driving a manual transmission. I was shocked to see that the fabric was coming apart so easily, WHITIN 2 DAYS!

Do you mean the floor mats? And which mats did you buy? There are 2 kinds available at the dealership. I think that more people are satisfied with the all-weather mats, they seem to be much more durable though more expensive. The "carpet" that everyone is referring to is the one piece of molded stuff that covers the entire floor including under the seats and up to the door sills
