Engine Noise
Engine Noise
I think I only have one more of these stupid threads but I just had to gauge the response. I haven't seen much talk on the engine noise in archives.
We test drove a Fit last night and both of us felt the engine noise was loud. It's far louder than our Civic or Accord. Of course, it quiets down when you're up to speed.
Does this bother Fit owners?
We didn't have the radio on during the test drive.
Thanks...
PS. I know that some here are into modding and I can understand the enjoyment at listening to an engine roar but it's just not our thing.

It bothers me occasionally... It's not something that goes away with time either ...
Having the radio on helps!! I'm sure if you added sound deadening behind the dash at the firewall you wouldn't hear it, but that would be alot of work.

hi rushlow, the engine actually sounds kinda cool. i'm just not sure how i'll like listening to it after every stop/start/up to speed sequence.
whether it goes away with time is another question I was going to ask. the car we test drove had like 15 miles on it.
the Fit definitely seems better than the one we drove a year and a half ago.

you'll have to search around, but there are a couple of ppl here that did some sound deadening, and were pleased with their results.
edit: i didnt see that you said 'engine noise' the sound deadening was focused on road noise.

It doesn't really bother me, my day to day routine the car rarely sees 4000 rpm, and I usually have the radio up to where I don't even notice it. If someone's in the car and the radio is on I never notice the engine.
The engine is remarkably quiet when idling or under cruise throttle conditions. When you accelerate with any authority at all, the engine obviously does make a bit of noise, but it is not that annoying. Personally, I enjoy the sound of those 3000 hamsters furiously pounding away on that treadmill.
Nothing a CAI and an axle back can't fix! Add those two things and you'll drive around with the windows down in January just to hear her sing. No offense but if you are offended by the engine noise in Hondas cheapest car you should probably look into buying a Lexus or an Acura. For 16-22K the engine noise isn't that bad at all, try driving a Chevy Aveo, Hyundai Accent, Smart Fortwo, Kia Rio, Suzuki SX4, or Ford Focus and report back on which seems most offensive. Even money says it won't be the Fit.
Yeah, the class of car doesn't require it t be a luxury cruiser with whisper quiet sound. As well, I think they let the engine sound it out a little more for it's "sport" appeal. It might for me get annoying a little when you are at highway speed try to sneak by someone unnoticed... but then again, this car is meant as an urban runner, not a cross country comfort mobile.
I think it also depends on where you live. I live in a very hilly part of the country.
We drove today and it didn't seem annoying.
Btw, the road noise from the Fit I drove today is no worse than my Civic.

You know, the engine in the Civic is quiet and in the Accord, it is nearly silent by comparison. I don't think one has to go to the Lexus or Acura level. We have these two cars and they were bought in that price range and the Fit pales in comparison.
After the second test drive today, I don't think it is a dealbreaker. If you get up to speed on flat stretch, the engine is really silent and the road noise is good. However, there is no such thing as a flat stretch where I live.
We use our manual transmission Fit mostly for long-distance travel. The engine runs at relatively high RPMs at cruise--almost exactly like our Miata. I got used to it and appreciate how easily the engine will pull the car up hills with the cruise control on. I spent eight hours in the Fit on Tuesday and ten hours in it yesterday. I didn't find engine or road noise to be a problem for us. It's a good, strong sound that doesn't intrude into my consciousness while we travel.
You'll have to decide for yourself, of course.
Cheers.

Personally, the Fit is a very quiet car when it wants to be. It does what the owner tells it to do.

What I noticed most about the Fits engine note when i first drove one was that it sounded rather "industrial" By that I mean that it had a rather flat tone with more than a small amount of intake whine/whistle. It didn't offend/bother me but I knew it was something i would address in my modification of the car. I also live in rather hilly country and climb mountains in my commute to/from work each day, so I can feel your pain. Dynamat sells a "under-hood kit" which you may want to look at down the road, I understand it helps with engine noise intruding on the cabin.
Ok. Understood!
Thanks. I'll put that tire in my notes for when I need a replacement.
