No Locking Gas Cap!

I didn't realize this until I got my Fit home, but the gas flap doesn't lock, and the cap doesn't lock either. That is just stupid!

I ordered a locking gas cap today for $30. Now I'll have to be careful not to scratch the paint around the gas flap trying to unlock the cap with my keychain.

No need to keep the key on a key chain. Keep it in the car in a cubby - no need to carry it around all the time.

The gas flap doesn't lock? You sure? Have you tried opening it when you've locked your doors?

The EDM/JDM ones do have the little latch that pops out when doors are locked.

It's a locking gas cap.

Yes it is, i went into work today and check the catalog again, opened up our parts bin, and bam, we had one, so yes they are available, and the part number is 17680-SAA-G00

do i need to do a how to on the install, lol.

i only paid 26.00 for it, mind you i work in parts for a dealer, so i'm paying 10% over our cost.

I am %100 positive it does not lock. The flap does have a latch on the inside, but there is no detent that pops out from the vehicle.

From reading my owner's manual, it turns out that little latch is to hang the fuel cap on so it doesn't touch the car while refueling.

I got that locking gas cap, and rekey the gas cap cylinder door lock to my own car keys. Threw out the keys that it came with. Much better with no extra keys!

maybe a stupid question, but did you bring the cap to a lock-smith to get it done?

i did it myself because i have the split keys for the cylinder. but you have to goto a lock-smith that does wave key rekeying.

How can you get it re-keyed. My Fit has some chip in it that is unique. It is supposed to cost $75 for another key. Does anybody have alternatives to this?
Thanks
Steve

you can get it rekey...

the gas cap lock cylinders has whole bunch of split keys inside. and you tell the locksmith to match it up to your car keys. usual price of rekeying is only 30-35 cdn...

I was thinking about the locking gas cap and cover - or lack thereof.

You know how in nature some poisonous snakes (or other animals) are mimicked by non-poisonous species. Other animals don't mess with the non-poisonous ones because they can't tell the difference.

I think the Fit will be helped by a smilar effect. Since almost all cars have locking gas cap covers, nobody will bother to even try opening the one on the fit because they just figure it is locked.

Besides a good theif could steal the whole vehicle in less time than it takes to siphon the tank. Really not much point - especially with such a small tank that will usually not be full.

its not that they want to steal the car.. putting honey or sugar in the gas tank is quite effective to vandalise the vehicle fuel system.

I don't want to cut the tether of the non-locking gas cap just to put my locking gas cap on, so what is the trick to popping the tether off of the cap or chassis? It looks like you have to somehow "pinch" the 4 "prongs" of the screw holding the tether to the chassis.

*Edit* - figured it out- you just push on the screw (from the bottom) holding the tether and it pops right off!

umm you guys do know that they can't syphon gas easily out of the car right? a tube the size of the one used on the washers will work, one the size of a normal syphon tube won't.

I just tried the locking gas cap from my 1985 Olds 88 and it fits fine.

Canadian Tire has a sale on this week, you can probably get one that fits
for anywhere from $3 to $6. Just take the original for sizing. A very minor
problem.

In addition, it'll have to be about 12ft long...
