Oil change interval

What's the manual say is the oil change interval for the Fit? What are the dealers saying?

I know the Accord went to 10K miles in 2003, but the Honda service departments were still telling customers to continue to change it every 3K miles. I'd stick with the manufacturer's recommendation rather than the service department's, since the service department has to make money just like the sales dept....

In Canada the dealer says every 6000km, aka 3700miles. I change the oil at 5000km with Mobil 1 10w-30 in the summer and Mobil 1 0w-20 in the winter. At -35c 0w-20 oil is the best.

Also Honda puts Canadians on the "Severe" schedule. On my Mom's civic the manual reads "10,000km, If you are driving in Canada use the severe schedule"

Mine told me that the car will tell you when the oil life is at 15%. That's when you should get it changed. I have no idea how that will translate in miles.

i was told today by the honda guy to get your first oil change at 5,000, then at every 7,500... but since i live in such hot weather he said it's better at every 5,000 for me.

I always use synthetic - much less chance of sludge and much better startup lubrication in the extremem cold.

The painfull sounds from an engine started in -30 F weather with conventional oil are hard to bear.

I go 5k miles between. Used to be 3k just to be extra safe, but I was basically flushing honey colored oil - too much of a waste.

Yeah, Mobil 1 0w-20 is teh bomb in the winter. -30f in SD eh? -45f up here at the extream. (between where I am and SD is, is ND)

I will still be doing mine every 3,000 miles if not earlier depending on how hard it is driven...

-45 will get your attention (record here is only -35, but I am in the "banana belt" of SD - it gets colder to the East) combine that with a 50 mph wind and things really get interesting.

Crazy thing is we get days over 110 in the shade most summers. Now picture a Fit turning near 4,000 rpm for 3 or 4 hours straight (high speed limit and lots of distance between towns) in 110 degree heat with the A/C on high (which creates even more heat in the engine bay).

Another reason for synthetic - more stable in extreme heat. I am hooked on the stuff. 205,000 miles on my Integra under the conditions described above and the valvetrain still looks new. It also revs about the same as the Fit.

dealers are sales people, not a mechanic.

Longer you keep your engine oil, more chance of getting sludge in your engine, it's simple as that.

I change the oil by myself at every 5~6000 km. It coast me about $35 cdn(oem filter+ castrol syntech) and its rewarding.

I forgot about the maintenance minder feature. I guess that's what you're referring to?

Hello,
What about this Amsoil??
It says you dont need to change for a ridiculous 25K
I would never do that but is it really that good?
I alway use mobil 1 synthetic, but it might be hard to get

Leave factory fill in for first 5k miles, change out and then at 20% of oil life remaining per maintenance minder thereafter.

Use Honda (made by Fram to Honda specs) filter and Honda 5W-20 oil (it's a blend, even better than full syn). If you do use a full syn, do not use until after 15k miles on the engine.

Trust me.

PS - use Honda fluids and filters for everything.

What weight of oil??

What are the oil recomendations for the fit in countries outside the USA? Dan from canada uses different oil in the summer and I was wondering what the manual recomends up there and overseas??

At 1,000km then every 10,000km according to the manual in Australia. Should be changed more frequently under extreme driving conditions which includes constant stop/start city driving. I change it every 5,000km with Honda FEO oil.

Go to BOBISTHEOILGUY and check the used oil ****ysis. You will see 5W-20 oil is fantastic stuff. The U.S. is ahead of the rest of the world on this. Do not put a heavier viscosity oil in the Fit, it will only make that wonderful little Honda high reving engine more sluggish.

This is a win-win-win, better mileage, better protection (less start-up wear as the lighter oil flows quicker), and best of all a freer revving engine.

Finally, change oil per maintenance minder. The computer measures many variables that impact the oil in actual use to determine when the oil should be changed. It's a no brainer. Technology can be a wonderful thing. The Fit is not a '55 Chevy.
