Honda had been selling motorcycles for a decade by 1969 so it took a while to catch on...that is, buying a Honda that had more than two wheels.

 

Sooo cute. I saw one of these at a meeting a while ago, and you won't believe how small they are. But great mileage

 

I would rock one of these. Seriously.

 

Which is why my parents used to say Honda-car when I was growing up. Honda used to be only known for motorcycles. How times have changes...

I used to own a 1976 Honda Civic. I took it to all my baseball games and tournaments.

It got 45 mpg without any Hypermiling.

 

I see one on my commute home all the time. It has a great silver paint job.

 

Austin Mini knockoff. Not bad cars but OMG do they seem small on today's roads.

 

Back in 1969 there where very, very, large cars around, there wasn't the plague of SUV's however.
Our small cars have simply gotten bigger with each new model, and now we don't see really small cars around (the notSmart Car excepted). This is the reason we even have the Fit here to drive. The Civic had gotten bigger then the old Accords, and Honda didn't want to downsize them, so they introduced a new model to "fit" the segment where the Civic used to be.

 

Are you sure? I seem to remember a friend having a Honda S 600 Sports Car which I think was Honda's first car. Honda S600 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I was really small and actually had a chain drive hooked up to the transmission (I know because he broke it and we tried to fix it). I think the car was from the mid 1960's. Perhaps it only sold up here in Canada.

 

Leno has one of those Honda sports cars; that is where he coined the saying "It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

Apparently it is one of his favorites

 

No offense to Leno but that saying has been around for a long long time. I googled and did not come up with an origin, but it's ancient.

That old Honda in the original post really does look like an old Mini. Very cool!

Back in the mid-80's, I had a 1973 Civic, and NOT with the CVCC engine either. That thing only got about 22 MPG on the interstate, due to being a 4-speed and needing another cog or two. It was fun to drive and easy to park and pretty reliable, even though it was kinda old when I got it. But it wasn't the gas-saver I needed back then. I have rarely missed it.
