Window Tint Question
Window Tint Question
Hi guys I just had my windows tinted 20% all around except my windshield. My question is for those who have or less than the legal tint have you been pulled over? I kind of regret that I did not do 35% on two front windows so my worry of getting pulled over is less.

Don't know that I would worry, but I DID 35% and 20% because I don't want to get pulled over when I'm drinking and driving, or smoking a fat dobie, for tinted windows!

In Illinois, it's illegal to have any tinting on the windshield (except an "eyebrow"), the "side wing" windows, or the front driver/passenger door. But I see people driving around with 35%, 20%, and even 5% on their front windows all the time. I've even seen cars here with the windshields tinted. I don't know how these people keep from getting pulled over. I'm getting tinting today: 20% on the back half only. I don't want to take chances.
I hear ya. Alabama's legal tint is 35% for cars but SUV's, trucks, vans can go darker. Its stupid they won't allow it for cars.
I could have paid cash & gone darker on mine but I was told there would be no warranty.
Also if I were to get pulled over & have to re-tint thats added cost. I stayed legal & got 35% all around.

I have to update my prior post. I did not get my tinting done today. Even though I had made an appointment a week ago--and taken a couple of hours of Personal Time to leave work early today--the shop called me an hour before my appointment and said they couldn't work me in! They just had too many cars to do today and couldn't possibly get to mine before the end of the day. Apparently, they had several people drop their cars off this morning and just haven't been able to keep up.
Personally, I'd think that the person you'd tell you couldn't get to their car would be the "drop off" rather than the person who went to the trouble to make an appointment! Kind of makes me wonder how much they really want my business. The problem is, there is only one other place in town that does auto tinting; they're booked solid for almost 2 weeks! Aaargh!

I had my previous car for 6 years and the Fit for a little over 1 year. Both cars had 5% tint on all windows and I've only been pulled over twice, 2nd time was 2 days ago

ah yes tint is great to have. i've got 50% up front and 18% in the back. sometimes i feel like i just should have gone with 18% up front too, but I'm still very happy with it. i've gotten pulled over or had a cop approach my car quite a few times since i've had it actually and they never said anything about the tint. so i'm not too worried about it, and if i ever get ticketed for it i know it will just be like $100. that's the choice i made when i got the tint.
you do live in virginia and I know that the laws and the cops there can be pretty stuck up. so good luck to you

See, thats not fair. I'm in California, where you are only allowed to have up to 70% on the front windows, and nothing on the windshield.. I'm getting 20% put on all the other windows next week. I would honestly love to get 20% all the way around, but I know the second I leave the lot, it's get pulled over. It's just my luck.
As far as I know, when you get a ticket here, it's actually a fix-it ticket, where you pay the fine AND have the tint removed, then have an officer sign off on the ticket saying they approve of the job. A good friend of mine actually just had a cop buddy of his sign off on the ticket, without removing the tint. Three weeks later he got the same ticket again, and they impounded the car. Not worth the inconvenience to me!

I finally got my tinting done today (yes, at the same place that canceled out on me last week). I got 20% on all the "legal" windows: here in Illinois that means the back half only. It really looks sharp! I'll try to get some pics this weekend and post them.

I live in Alabama, but got my tint done "Florida legal" while in Florida. It's 35% front, 20% rear, and an 8" wide "visor" of 20% across the top of the windshield. I have never had any cops make an issue out of it, probably because you CAN see me through the window. Even if you have 20% all around, you should be able to see in there somewhat. That's the thing for most police officers, they want to see you and know that you aren't acting in a way that might indicate a danger to them.
My previous car, a Camry, had 5% all around, plus was mirrored along the bottom edge. When I'd approach police checking licenses, etc; I would roll down the windows before I was beside them. Never was hassled. My daughter drives that car now, and before I gave it to her, I offered to remove the tint. Told her if the tint stayed, she was taking on the responsibility of driving a car with illegal tint. She wanted to keep the tint. She's had it for over 2 years, and has not been hassled. Once, she was stopped in a road construction zone with her windows down. Mexican guys working by the road hassled her because she's very attractive. She just presses the window button without even looking at the guys. Window comes up, and suddenly the guys are looking at their own reflection, no longer able to see into the car at all. Huhuhuh. She loved it.
