This says it all.

If you've spent that much on head unit and speakers, just go to your local muffler shop and get a generic muffler. You're car might sound like it had some bad Taco Bell, but it's all good.

You two chumps above me might want to do a bit of research before you bash the OP. A muffler bypass actually sounds quite good on both the GD and GE. It is reminiscent of an SRT-4, but nowhere near as loud.

I hate rice, and this route doesn't sound ricey one bit. The resonator upstream takes care of most of the nasty harmonics.

thanks for the info internet-tough-guy.

i know what a gd/ge sounds like with the muffler unbolted. there's an entire multi-paged, stickied, thread in the exhaust forum dedicated to it. if the OP took 2 minutes to do his/her own research, he/she would know the answer to their own question. right?

hahaha fitfreak DRAMA! woot! btw srt4's SOUND LIKE SHIET! can you say " rolling popcorn machines?"

okay back on topic.

you can do it, ive had mine off for the longest time, but i did feel a lose of torque. but i drive my car every 2 months or so, if that...so its not important to me. i had an exhaust, i just sold it and never went back to another one.
if your that concerned in saving money, get yourself a cherry bomb and weld it on. you can pick up an es tuning muffler for 100 bucks. or if you a little bit louder with a lower growl pick up a jdmcarboy.com twinloop muffler. to cut and weld a muffler shouldnt cost you more then 20 bucks. to get a crush bent pipe all the way through with say 12" glasspack resonator shouldnt cost more then 100 bucks.

theres many ways to go. people are selling skunk2 exhaust for like 180 used.

like i said, if you take it off there will be no backpressure. so that will result in less torque. its really up to you. it sounds good without it. it isnt all that loud.

take the bolts off and you decide.

People bashing it have not done it. I took off the muffler and got a straight pipe with the stock tip. It looks absolutely stock and even sounds stock too. Its only a little louder on certain rpm's.

People posting these posters and what not are really showing their maturity and lack of knowledge.

I do not have a muffler and I guarantee you that if you rode in my car, you would not notice it. It does not get louder than a stock 350Z/G35. Try it for yourself before you come on here and jump on the bandwagon. If you dont like it, put it back on. I felt no loss in performance or fuel economy. FACT.

Hey swmmrboyhndafit101,
In an attempt to free up some extra horsepower, and still stay H Stock legal in SCCA AutoX, I had an axleback straight pipe made. It is definitely louder than stock, but not too annoying. I don't know if it gave me any extra horsepower, but it is a lot lighter, and does sound aggressive. Actually, I did lose a bit of low end, but then again, it did seem to come alive at 5,000 rpm. The cost was only $40, so it wasn't too much of a price to pay to find out first hand.
Here is a video I made:
YouTube - 2007 Honda Fit Straight Pipe sound clip
I ran this pipe on the street for about half a year without any encounters with law enforcement.
FYI, I have since replaced the straight pipe with a fabricated MagnaFlow axleback. This set up runs on the quiet side, but does have a nice note when I get on it. Here is the unit that I had put on:

after hearing that clip from youtube it honestly IMO does not sound that bad. But still if you want to keep legal ( i don't know the emissions restrictions for maryland) I would honestly just spend the 200$ on an axleback or go to a muffler shop. In the long run you won't regret it.

So for no loss of fuel economy or performance, and an almost stock sound I should spend money to hack my muffler off and have a straight pipe with a stock tip welded back in its place? All for a modification that could get me pulled over, and will give me nothing more than a minimal gain?

Fucking brilliant!

Why bother with the straight pipe at all then? That just costs money! Just crawl under the car and start bashing holes in the muffler. More noise and it's free.

So you admit it sounds and looks like stock but you wouldstill get pulled over. Taking off your muffler is FREE, sounds way better than stock, and is quieter than ANY aftermarket exhaust. Your right, very brilliant.

I've ran my straight pipe for a while now, sounds awesome, and have not been pulled over for it. Again, ANY aftermarket exhaust will be louder.

No, I don't think it sounds better, and the idea of a straight pipe is to cut the muffler off and weld in a pipe which costs money. Taking the muffler off is called taking the muffler off. You may have not been pulled over for it, but that doesn't mean that others haven't or wont and that you wont be pulled over for it in the future. Its not better than stock because the purpose of a stock muffler is to muffle sound from the exhaust, by taking that away you haven't improved over stock at all. Go back to doing your homework...

Have you heard a Fit without a muffler or with a straight pipe? I doubt you have.99% of cars sound extremely loud and sound like shit when you do a straight pipe. Doing a straight pipe axleback cost me about $20 at my local shop and sounds much better than any ricey aftermarket exhaust. Keep insulting me all what you want. It just shows your lack of knowledge and experience. And unless you've been in a HONDA FIT with a straight pipe axleback then you have no clue. Any other car will be loud as hell and sound like shit.
