What is the best gear to use at 40mph

What is the best gear to use at 40mph ? 4th or 5th on MT ? Does it make a big difference on fuel consumption ? Does using low gears use more gas ?

I love my fit! Already 620 miles after one week Not washed yet No ticket yet

Yes, using lower gears uses more gas.

If it's a flat, level road, use 5th gear.

if u dont' mind acceleration (i.e. in city) use highest gear possible. for me, if i know i'm crusing, i'm using 5th gear (or neutral) even if its 25mph.

lower gears use more gas cuz they require more RPMS to accomplish the same as a higher gear for a given speed.

Agree. Driving a manual is all about feel. Use your senses to tell you what gear is right, Grasshopper.

Just cruising down the street, with no immediate need to accelerate: Put it in the highest gear that doesn't cause the thing to buck. Rushing up that mountain 2 lane with limited, short passing zones and lot's of motorhomes and harley trains: Keep it up in the powerband.

I like to keep mine (MT) between 3200 - 4000 rpm. Granted my turf is urban, but it allows good engine braking-effect and remains in the sweet spot for rapid deployment!

Ok, that's 64km/h. If I'm holding that speed 5th for sure. If I anticipate that I'll need to step on it, then 4th it is......or 3rd. 5th gear is good down to 55km/h AKA 33mph if you don't need much power.

40mph I drive in 5th gear.

Anything below 35mph and I'll use 4th gear as the car has a bit of a struggle trying to accelerate in 5th gear at 30mph.

Ok and I suppose it drinks more gas if I use compression over brakes ? I did it a lot on my two civic for 4 years each one and the brakes were as new after 130 000km.
