ive done both. if you dont mind the hassle you can probably get a little more with private sale espeically if yours is in great condition. carmax is good, they are very convenient and usually they will give you a good deal but only based on market value.

meaning, even if your car's in emaculate condition they will only give you about a 'good' price. never will they give you the kbb's 'excellent' price.

sell it on your own, if you can swing it. otherwise, you'll take a bigger hit.

I'd take it into Carmax, get an offer, and then advertise it yourself (after researching used prices in autotrader, edmunds, etc.). If it doesn't sell within whatever period you need, take it back to Carmax. Their offer probably won't extend more than a day or 2 but it shouldn't change that much.

I shopped for Fits at carmax before buying new. It seemed their prices (they only had one on the floor) were higher than new MRSP, so you should get a good price for it, assuming it hasn't been in an accident. I went home and emailed carmax, after checking the prices, pointing out their avaricious stupidity. They emailed me back and said the car had already sold. heh.

Do not sell it to Carmax....you will get about 25% less if you do. The last vehicle I sold went for $14,500 just 6 weeks after carmax offered me $11,000! Use vehix.com to list your car. It is free for the first 3 months and I had 21 hits from them and just 4 from autotrader($75 for 3 months) in the 2 months I had the vehicle for sale.

i was forced to always sell my cars privately, because i had so much motor work done to it. for excample. forced induction. but if i could choose, i would have done all my trades with dealership or carmax in a heartbeat.

How about "car brokers"? I am not sure if that is their title but I have a couple of them asking me about the car. They said the process are signing off the car to them and they take full responsibility for the car. Lmk never heard of them before. Btw they sent me a contract so it looks legit. Anybody can confirm or done it this way?

Sell it privately.

I had a 2006 Civic EX 2-door with about 65k miles on it. Carmax offered me $11k. I sold it easily and quickly for $13.5k. I advertised it at I think about $14,200 and had lots of interest right away, but ended up selling to a friend for $13.5 because it saved me the trouble of dealing with the public. Had I held out though, I'm sure I could have gotten $14k.
