Just search for the nunerous threads on this subject. 100 different opinions at least. Most doubt Honda engineers know what they are doing or they know better than them.

When the gauge says 15% go to dealer. Pretty simple.

The Fitfreak forum search engine is weak, especially since it doesn't index 3-character strings such as "oil" or "fit". Google works better: first oil change site:fitfreak.net You will find more answers than you can stand.

Since I bought my Fit used, I'm not worried about break in periods. It's really cool that Honda has a gauge on it too that shows you the supposed life of your oil. But I'm still using the golden rule of 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever comes first. Although I'm surprised Honda recommends using 5W-20 What's going on there? Why such lite weight oil? Has anybody tried something like 10W-30 or 10W-40 too?

Do what ever u think is best man but I talked to two shops and the dealer and all said wait till 15 or 20% I was really weirded out too. I always fallowed that rule for my other cars but I check my oil and the sensor seems to be reading the oil pritty close

Well I am going to keep my eyes on Honda's oil sensor and see how close it comes to 3 months or 3,000 miles in my car. I am tempted to go by what it says too especially soon since over 90% of my travel will be accomplished on motorbike while the Fit just sits at home Although if it was as easy to do an oil change on that car as it is my motorbike, I'd be happy to do them myself too.

Hey nothing against you but I just want to make a statement about your post. My question is since you believe that rule so if you change your engine oil at 3000 miles then you did not use the car(Fit) that much for 3 months, let say you only use the car for 500 miles since you changed the oil. So 3000+500 is 3500. Are you changing the oil again at 3500 miles?

To me is not how many miles or months you have the car since oild change. Its how the car was use between oil changes. I always wait till my guage say 30% or 20% before I do my oil change.

Mine is changed every 3,000 miles regardless of what anything says... I'd rather know the oil inside is staying fresh & clean than wonder if its hurting the engine or not.

I haven't changed it yet...the oil indicator light is still at 80% , only have 2500 miles on it after almost 8 months.

i waited till 20% on my fit for the first oil change. i ran the car ~7300 miles before the 20% was on the oil indicator. I changed the oil with mobile 1/ mobile 1 oil filter. mind you i have driven over 12,500 miles within 4 months so i do alot of driving.

i think the oil indicator will be mislead once you pour the good synthetic stuff in. i think it calculates values on dino oil. ill have to run a analysis on the oil after i run the car for 10,000 on the mobile 1 to see if the oil has broken down.

If you really want to know vs. wonder - send a sample or 3 off to blackstone laboratories. I bet you my car that they won't tell you 3k mile changes are necessary or beneficial.

Hit 15% at around 7,9XX miles. This was run from Sept. 2, 2009 until Feb. 26, 2010. So that's about 6 months.

Most new cars use 5w-20 oil. Lower viscosity oils help increase fuel economy. Critical tolerances in these newer engines are much closer than they used to be and a heavier oil is not needed to 'bridge the gap' as it were. There are race oils on the market now that are 0W-20...
