Fit vs. Tree in Reverse-----TOTALED!!!!!

On the way to work the other morning at 5 am me and my fiance were cruising at 65 on the highway when a deer came on to the highway. I swerved and lost control of the car causing us to do 360's across to highway then jumping the ditch into a tree in reverse. Next time i will be hitting the deer instead. My insurace came out and totaled the car i guess the good thing is i have new car replacement on my policy so they will be buying me a 2011 fit straight from the factory. Here is what over 15,000 dollars of damage looks like. It twisted the frame, unibody, and bent to rear axle.

Things happen for a reason. I think you will enjoy your new Fit.

Honestly the deer probably would have totaled it too and might have gone through the windshield. Were there any injuries?

After this accident, any thoughts of getting a car that could take more impact? Like a AWD?

Before the fit i owned an audi S4 and i loved it but both of the turbos went out and didnt want to spend the money to fix it. So yea i would love to own a awd car like a subaru, audi, or maybe an evo but since the insurance is buying me a brand new fit and i love 40+mpg it will have to wait

I've never heard of this type of policy. What company are you with, and what was the extra premium per year? Here I think they just have "gap" insurance and that's packaged with the loan (pays if you're upside down on the loan).

Maybe I just didn't ask the right questions.

i had the same thing, but i hit the deer, and i was so glad i did instead of fallin of the road or off the bridge.
Im glad you and the fiance is fine. Next time hit the deer, cos u will probably have better chance of living than swerving it and ending up somewhere worse.
Kill BAMBI!!!!!

Yes! Bambi must die. I saw his cousin laid up on the shoulder of I285 (north end) the other day. Sure sign of the coming apocalypse. Maybe it fell off some guy's pickup (season doesn't open till October, but this is Atlanta, Jake.)

It happened to a friend of mine, a deer right through her windshield and she was hurt pretty bad, blood everywhere, car totaled.
If she had swerved she would have hit the ditch or something else and may have been better off - so the cop on the scene told her.
He said he's seen many accidents with deer and the worst ones were through the windshield. One woman died because the buck crushed her into the seat.

OH Highway Patrol says to brake, but do not swerve because you cannot outmaneuver a deer. Plus if you go in the ditch or hit someone else it's a "failure to control" ticket.

You can't outmaneuver a deer, but you don't want to hit the deer, either. We have the same problem with deer here in Western Illinois as the OP in 61111. I don't want to hit the critter (lots of injuries around here from deer coming in through the windshield or from hooves when you hit the critter and the legs come in through the window) but reflexes take over and I always swerve to avoid it. One big reason we bought the Fit with VSA. I know that the VSA thinks a lot faster than I do. We make a lot of long trips in the Fit and often return home late at night when the deer are out and we're tired. I've had to swerve a few times and have never come close to doing 360s because the VSA keeps the Fit going where I point it. Believe me--it's not driving skill. You can just steer and let the computer worry about sorting it all out.

Best wishes for the new Fit.

Cheers.

This is true, and the same goes for insurance purposes. Miss the deer and hit an object, and all the insurance company sees is a 1 vehicle accident against a stationary object. Expect a rate hike.

yea that cop that was first to the seen told us to hit the deer next time also but it all happened so fast i dont know what i would do if this were to happen again. I have country insurance and i have zero problems with them. They were out the next day to see my car and make a decision...I know i cant upgrade anything (not like it matters i had every option) but does anyone know if i can get a different color? I have not had any luck with red cars.

From my experience they cut you a check and you're off but some companies may operate differently. I would call them and tell them exactly what you want.
