First Car Suggestions
First Car Suggestions
Hi Everyone,
I am brand new to this forum. A little about me, I'm 23, male, and will recently be completing university. I have relied on public transportation my whole life, but now it is time to buy my first car. And have a few things that I'd like insight about. I will be using the car for leisure and work. I will be working for an accounting firm and travel is required. I also like camping, and want to go on a few road trips this summer.
i) Brand new or used? I have been approved for credit to finance a new or used car, so this is not an issue. As I never have had a car, I need feedback on whether or not a new car is worth it? I would like to buy a new car, but in practicality a used car would suffice. I also have limited driving experience so maybe a used car would be wiser?
2) I really like the Honda Fit a lot, its my first choice right now. Right now it's my number 1 choice, but I have yet to test drive. I also would consider, the Toyota Yaris, or the Mazda 3. Does anyone have any insight or insight in comparing the fit to these other models?
The things I'm looking for in a car are:
1) Price
2) Reliability/quality
3) Fuel Efficiency
4) Safety
5) Looks
6) Residual Value
3) Lastly, some advice on buying the car would be appreciated. Some do's or don't? How to get the best deal? Someone told me that because of the earthquakes in Japan, I will have a hard time in bargaining at a dealership?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The center mounted dash pod on the Yaris might take some getting used to. I drove an Echo with the center mounted pod and found I never could get used to it. I did not like the seating position in the driver seat of the Yaris.
Mazda 3...
Really nice vehicle. I rented on for a week about a year ago. There has been some controversy over the "smiley" front. Darker colors tend to minimize the look. Very peppy even with the base engine. I found the driver area to be a little more roomy than the Fit.
Decide what you want in a vehicle and then check out those vehicles that meet your requirements. The Fit basically meets all items on your list... particularly if you like the looks.
I'd go used on a first car unless you really want new- choice is yours. New cars you know the history but pay more, used cars are a bit cheaper but you don't know what they've been put through.
The Fit is an excellent option with your criteria. I've heard very good things about the Mazda3. I actually have it on my "list of cars to test drive" when I decide to sell off my Civic. The 5 door hatch looks great and has some extra room if you should need it down the road (starting a family...?). The Yaris seems a bit small if you're going camping with a good amount of gear + people... even in 5 door trim. That center cluster would need getting used to.
