General Fit Talk General Discussion on the Honda Fit/Jazz.

Switched to premium; instantly went from 33-35 mpg to 35-37 mpg.

No Steve you are not.

To dismiss the topic discussions as nonsense indicates you have little reason to be part of them. Your insistence in arguing to your own objective has frustrated many who happen to be friends of mine. I can hardly stand by and watch you happily go at it bringing them to utter frustration.

Do that face to face where I come from and I can guarantee you would get your ass kicked.

Wake up pal - look in the mirror. It's bad behavior. Humble yourself to that fact.

Edit: My apologies to all for the off-topic diversion.

If your friends are at "utter frustration," perhaps their conviction that premium fuel makes their Fits go farther or faster is at fault.

Please advise them to refrain from invective and obscenities.

You need to put up some facts relevant to what your statement makes.

The Exxon prem. and some of "papa's secret recipe" 1.25 oz. per gallon and my lil fit kicks it. But hey that's my exp. and as Tex recommended to me years ago changing out to lighter rims and tires reeaallyy helped.
There are some Very Smart Cookies here that can smell SB b4 it's typed. If it's something ya feel then say it that way but don't try to prove your claims w/o a solid foundation of reliable data.

I'm working on seeing just how high I can get on a single tank... trying my best to cruise as much as possible during deliveries (lower speeds with traffic and up to limit+5 or +10 where I can). Shutting off engine when I stop to drop off the food.

I even took a two hour drive around the northern area (up to McHenry county), to manipulate it. So far, 40.6 mpg with 100 miles on the odo (according to the display, which actually has matched calculated for a while).

I got 44.3 today on 6.32 Gal of Gas. - best tank yet The gauge was a hair below half of a tank (which seems to be normal for honda).
Previous few tanks:
41.67mpg - 6.1 Gal
43.43mpg - 6.54 Gal
42.58mpg - 6.2 Gal.

Hmmm my commute seems to be pretty steady.

All on Regular old 87. I tried a few tanks (4 full ones) in a row of premium last summer but never got this kind of economy.

I think the explanation rests with the fact that you had premium in it last summer. Like homeopathic medicine, the molecules of gasoline have a sort of memory that allows them to act like premium. Your tendency to only consume a little more than half a tank is providing the perfect dilution schedule (another homeopathic practice). Last summer the opposite was happening. Well that and you didn't clear the ECU with your scangauge prior to running premium.

Those are really good numbers but no one else are getting those type of numbers on regular. Do you drive using severe hypermiling techniques?
Do you have ethanol in your gas? Is it RFG with ethanol? Or do you go to a gas station and charge 5 dollars when they have a 10 dollar minimum and forget to add the gallon or two to your numbers?

I've gotten just under 45 mpg on regular before myself, but it calls for some planning ahead, coasting, and so forth. Doesn't need FAS or anything drastic, at least when your engine can do 12 valve operation .

If I drive like a "normal" person, and I've switched back and forth a number of times with ECU resets to check this, I won't ever see a mileage increase on premium. Idle quality changed when my exhaust valves worked themselves too tight but other than that there wasn't a difference.

Of course if you drive by load gauge and keep an eye on ignition on a trip you can squeeze benefit from those narrow situations that an engine can actually get more efficiency from it.

Around here with RFG north, Premium gives the best mpg. I am getting 42 mpg averaging 45 mph driving 56 miles a day 48 Intestate at 70 mph and the rest city. If you look at the adaptive MBT link it explains the ecu and timing with gas pedal position that makes it easier to get better mpg. If you hold down on the gas pedal with out lifting you mpg will drop but using regular you have to hold down the pedal more. Under certain conditions more fuel is added to control knock when using regular. Fuel trims is a good marker to mpg. I am pulling a lot of fuel compared to regular. -5-10 long term with another -2-5 Short term. I know thats not -7-15 percent but I see a 10 percent average increase in mpg with a smoother shifting and quieter motor.

I can say that I've gotten numbers like that up in Maine, running premium. After six hours @70MPH seeing 37MPG I exit off and get on RT1. My MPG goes up to 40+. Not a fluke, I've got another 100miles to go and they stay high. I've never seen 43, but 41-42 is 'normal'. Smooth sailing on a two lane road @55MPH with little stop and go over a rolling road. It's all in the conditions. My local driving is similar, only the stretches of highway are shorter. It's really hard to get to 40MPG, but I see an average of 38 easy.
I call it open rural driving. On my last trip north I was talking with LostHighway up at Moody's [great pie BigMike, come on up and I'll treat you to a slice] and he was saying he thought those conditions are the best for high MPG with the Fit - I have to agree.

Last summer I wasn't seeing those numbers on regular.
Funny thing is those molecules really did seem to forget they were regular and became premium at a perfect dilution schedule ;-)

Oh yeah, "open rural driving" is great for higher mpg.

Catching 5 of 6 traffic lights on the way to grab fast food can kill the mpg. And so can idling at Taco Bell. Made most of it back on the way back home (got all green!).

Is that on premium? In the winter I use mid grade. I bet I pass you during the day a few times.

Here is more info about reformate and operating conditions. http://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/hand...pdf?sequence=1
