It looks like rats chewed through it after the previous owner drilled holes in it to increase airflow.... It makes me wonder if he was out of filter oil and used something out of the kitchen cabinet on the filter... If you don't have to drive through low water crossings or flooded streets you might consider removing the plastic below what is supporting the filter... You would have an even more free flowing intake if you did... You might consider buying a can of rodent repellent and spraying under the hood, rats and mice like eating the plastic parts and wiring on cars for some unknown reason... You can pick up the missing clip at the parts department of a Honda dealership.

LOL...To be honest it really looks like the guy drilled some pilot holes and was attempting to just hack out the whole bottom of the box, unfortunately he probably had no clue what he was doing and did not have the right tools either.

I didn't have my glasses on when I was posting earlier.... You are right that is certainly what happened... I have to admit to doing the same sort of stuff when had a sudden brain fart idea and the wrong tools.. I was usually under the influence of alcohol when I did.. I can't drink in this 100+ heat that has been upon us for the last 23 days straight so I can use heat exhaustion as an excuse for screwing things up. There is no way I can have a drink and go outside in the heat.

That is a real hack job with a drill.

I hate to say this... but given the airbox hack you might
want to go over the rest of the vehicle carefully to see
if there are any other little horrors awaiting you.

Ouch! But then again hopefully you got a good deal buying used. Half empty or half full... Let's just say this is a modified CAI. ;-)

I've done the same to a more than a couple of cars and motorcycles... The only times that I questioned my decision to cut up a filter box was when my diesel powered Rabbit would set of every car alarm in a parking lot but only the first time it happened... It became a bit of a habit that was a lot of fun that I enjoyed a lot, especially at shopping malls during the Christmas rush.... The security guards patrolling in golf carts went crazy.

TC, that's one way to canvas the parking lots to check who's got a motion sensor and who doesn't. I can just picture a Rodney Dangerfield or a Chevy Case scene here...

I had to wear earplugs when I drove that thing.. It did improve my fuel mileage considerably to a very consistent 54.7 MPG.. We'll never again be able to drive so far so cheaply.

A Rodney Dangerfield scene with goggles, ear plugs and a Snoopy cap.
Well the diesels are making a comeback...

Sucks but at least you can easily revert back without spending too much.
Hopefully that's the last of suprises you find.

Yea let's hope it's the last bad suprise I get. I went to Honda and purchased a whole new lower half of the intake. Plastics, clip, hoses, etc for $37. So I'm not to upset anymore.

An old buddy of mine cut holes in the side of his 55 Buick's air cleaner in 1963... He said he wanted the kids at school to know he had a 4 barrel carburetor. It did sound pretty wild on a car with a DynaFlow transmission... It was kind of eerie sounding as a matter of fact.
