What Type Gas to Use?

Hi everyone, I just got my Fit about a week or two ago. The dealer at the time told me to use 87 octane for gas, but the manual says to use higher. Thoughts?

I don't have the manual anywhere near me at the moment - what exactly does the manual state?

Good old regular is all the Fit needs. Paying $2.92 @ BP by me in North NJ. Gotta love having not to use Premium.

If the ECU is set for 87 that's all it will need. Any higher and you're wasting money.

Premium!!!

I guess it's a matter of preferrence, which wont harm the FIT,Heck !! ,Some folks want a clean burn and better oomph!!.You cant go wrong with either.Fot the mileage your getting?? It's still a bit cheap to get premium....5 to 10 cents diff, give or take.Depending what the rates are.

Octane rating has NOTHING to do with oomph and clean burn. It's all about predetonation under pressure. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Octane is measured relative to a mixture of isooctane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane, an isomer of octane) and n-heptane. An 87-octane gasoline, for example, has the same knock resistance as a mixture of 87 vol-% isooctane and 13 vol-% n-heptane. This does not mean, however, that the gasoline actually should contain these chemicals in these proportions. It simply means that it has the same autoignition resistance as the described mixture."

However, if your engine is not a high compression engine then getting anything higher then what is recommend will do nothing for you. Even oil companies will admit this although begrudgingly since they would rather you paid for the premium fuel.

But hey it's your cash, throw it away as you will. As long as you think you are doing your car better then surely you are. :-)

This is one reason I chose the fit, so I can finally use 87 octane and not 93. My other cars require 93 since one is turboed and the other car has an upgraded motor and PCM.

Yup, high-compression engines need it to be able to get more power and proper burn. Like 200hp 4-bangers. On a car that's designed for 87, it doesn't do anything but waste money.

I think 87 is just fine but if you want to get more gas mileage, go one step higher to 89. My friend drives cleaning ladies for a living and he tanks up his van a lot so he has tried it all. He says he gets the most mileage from the medium grade of fuel and he swears by it.

Its only about 9 to 10 cents more per gallon and you end up saving in the long run.....

Sorry, but your friend isn't very smart. See the post above with the link to wikipedia. More octane doesn't do jack except help prevent detonation.

Additives might be what is helping, otherwise it's pure placebo in your friend's case.

Yea that - I've never seen any recommendations from Honda that the fit needs/wants anything > 87. If Honda says use prem, I'll use it, but I'd like to know where they say that.

Like the others, I agree that unless ye have pinging, no need/benefit from premium fuel.....

Thanks Brother!! I was just merely simplifying the reason behind the rating/grade.Your reason in understanding will be greatly needed if i was racing in the Formula 1 Series. Kidding aside!! Yes its probably true,If you/ or us all know what the GasOil manufacturing companies are doing beside refining/testing/additive sorts. We will never know.I call it an upsize move/desicion.Some will say that gas is all the same, but when it comes to the testing race circuit or what not??? Octane level matters. It's up to you to try and purchase if you can afford it.I could see the same use for a Fit but when your driving an exotic/sports car ie# DB7,Countach...Grade will matter.

Gotta love then Fits 87 or not!!!
