Motor Trend Comparo-Fit in FOURTH Place!!
I still like the Honda brand, and the performance aspects of the Fit over the leading cars, as well as its appearance. This article might inform the general public well in their choices, I don't know, I don't treat my car like an appliance. I also couldn't see myself driving a Yaris, Chevy-anything, or economy Hyundai, regardless of how competitive they are in the segment. Honda is stretching it for me as-is. It's a cheap car that does a lot of things well. Being quiet just isn't its strong suit. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater on that one if it is what keeps one from owning the car.
We all know the Fit is unique in its combination of features too. There isn't even a real competitor yet until someone has something that FITS as much stuff in it for the price:mpg ratio!

Anyone that loves Lotus 7s Fender tube amps and old Cadillacs is alright... I was taking Car and Driver, Motor Trend as well as Road&Track... Peter Egan I always read first... Most of the cars they report on will never be seen around here, are out of my price range and require more attention than I want to give them..
Just thought about this as I was coming home from grabbing dinner (after my flight home).
Having a 'negative' review is a good thing!!!
Here's what I think why...
Too many positive reviews may let Honda "sit on their laurels." We want Honda to IMPROVE the Fit beyond however good it is now. The Fit cannot keep continue to compete with newer cars that constantly boost one benefit or another over their competitors (higher mpg, better interior, handling, etc). Though, not many, if any, can claim all of the above.
Come on Honda... what's the next gen Fit gonna be like?!?

I would not complain about a true highway gear (regardless of the total number of forward gears) and some better aerodynamics to go along with it.
In fact, (I know I am weird) I don't like that they only brought over the 1.5 Vtec engine, I would actually prefer something with a little less power. But that would never go over well with a 'how fast does it go' magazine review.

I wonder how some of these comparisons would turn out if they were done at 100k mi. It might change the rankings compared to "initial quality"
Also, I've driven everything from 3spd column shifters to 18spd trucks. 5 seems to be the sweet spot for cars, manual or auto. Trucks are another world.

I would never drive any of the other cars on that list with the exception of the Mazda 2. That list is geared towards the average consumer, not driving enthusiasts.
April 2012 issue of Motor Trend magazine: In comparison of "Economy Five Door Hatchbacks", the Fit came in 4th place!!
The line up was as follows:
7th Kia Rio
6th Suzuki SX4
5th Mazda 2
4th Honda Fit
3rd Toyota Yaris?!
2nd Chevy Sonic
1st Hyundai Accent
Now, as much as I love the Fit (Currently awaiting delivery of 2012 Sport 5MT) I'm starting to feel that Honda is letting itself be outclassed. The YARIS has 4 wheel disc brakes?! Only the Fit & Mazda have 5 speed manuals, all the rest have 6 speeds! So, what do YOU think???

here's wat i think. these cars are made for the budget minded...while the Fit is a budget car it is not very cheap for the poor. with that in mind, other brands cram more features into their cars making it feel like a bargain. also never wat's going on behind the scenes with these reviews and magazines.
If you are looking for every bell, whistle, gimcrack and gewgaw that can be loaded onto a cheap car, then sure, look elsewhere than the Fit. Some of us value the quality and other attributes which the Fit has in abundance...the doodads don't come for free, folks. And not everyone is a magpie attracted to shiny objects
Buy your Hyundai or Chevy, and watch how many expensive "little things", or maybe not so little, suddenly break the minute the warranty is up (ask me how I know).

Not to mention resale value. I know the Fit will keep it's value better than the rest.

Because that is what happened with my 2000 Hyundai Elantra. As soon as it was out of warranty the windshield wipers, driver door handle, and 3 of the automatic windows all broke. Even before then the storage console lid fell off, the fuse box door stopped closing, and I guess some other little things I have mercifully blanked out of my memory. Never again!
Honda is never cutting edge, they tend to do proven things and then stick with them. If they do bring out a new idea, they have probably thoroughly tested it and then stick with it until they just can't keep it any longer.
Honda ATV's make me really mad. They are the most dependable machines out there and have a fantastic resale value, but the technology is so old it's laughable. They ride like buck wagons. They have sealed drum brakes. But they run forever.
I got a Honda because it's a Honda. And Honda knows that's why they sell... Reputation. They don't want to mess that up!

This is a very good point. Look at the Corolla, it looks basically the same as it did in 2002ish, they know they'll always sell a lot of them regardless of what they do to it, so why bother changing it.

If Suzuki is still gonna be sold in N.America the new Swift will be a sweet ride to my favorites are the Sonic,Fit and the 2.....and the Fiat 500 is a hoot to drive to and of course th Mini Cooper even tho its expensive. The Fiesta,Accent,Rio,and Versa are all in desperate need for better driving dynamics. The Sonic and the Swift will push Honda,Mazda, and Toyota to up their power everything else is there for the Fit,2,and Yaris and the Fiesta is a tranny away...the B-segment is the most inerresting thing going on in the automotive world right.
Your very wrong the Sonic is as fun as the Fit,Yaris and the 2 and it has the best steering and engine in the class and the shifter is just a spec behind the Fit and the 2 both of those gearboxes are flatout amazing. Now the Accent,Rio,and Versa are true appliances although the Accent and the Rio are quick and good handling appliances they are still appliances none the less, with a better tranny the Fiesta would be a hoot to.

I haven't even looked at the Sonic, because it's a Chevy, but I will test drive one out of curiosity. I'm looking at picking up a Chevy currently, but it's from 1965, so I have more faith in it's reliability.
my wife still likes the GE so i think it's a fine car for wat it is.
imho 99% of the people that buys these cars buy them cause they are cheap and fuel efficient. while the GE is fuel efficient it's not cheap compared to some of the others. from that perspective (and goal for most people that buy cheap cars) the Fit outclassed itself.

"What's the next generation Fit going to be like?"
Well, if it stays true to trends, the next generation will be larger, heavier, slower, uglier and more complicated.
I hope not, but that's what seems to happen to cars with each redesign.
