Most Mileage from a tank full
#7
After 4.5 yrs of driving our Fit...the most we have done on a tank is 390 miles. But we don't like to let the tank get too low. It took 9.0 gal to fill the tank...so 43.33 mpg.
That is slightly above our 4.5 yr average...which is 40.56. We live high in the mountains in NM, and we burn 86 Octane gas all of the time. That is regular gas here in NM.

Before I did extensive performance modifications to my car I was able to get 38 mpg, driving on a combination of rural roads, in small towns and at 80+mph on highways... By filling to the top of the filler tube while rocking the car to eliminate air pockets I was able to get over 500 miles from a tank pretty constantly... I can only go about 390 miles doing the same thing now.

Imperial Gallon is larger, of course.
Seriously, this thread deserves an award for the most inane topic on FF. Coyote's anecdote for rocking the car to eliminate air pockets takes the cake.
In a single thread we have encouragement to compromise the fuel system's seals AND run it out of gas started by the op in a thinly veiled advert for amsoil.
Well done.

I don't doubt he rocked his car to top it off. It sounds just like him!
A modern fuel system is sealed to prevent fuel vapor leakage into the atmosphere. Topping off and rocking the car to "eliminate air pockets" removes the air space for fuel expansion. At best you'll waste fuel by leaving it on the ground or allowing it to escape to the atmosphere. At worst you'll damage your car.
Next time you're at the Dr's, Bullet, take your owner's manual for reading material.

Get off of it Steve.. I've been doing this for over 6 1/2 years without any problems whatsoever.... Like I have told you before, the only vehicle I've done this with that responded negatively to doing this was a BMW R1100 GS.. It ran a little rich for a few seconds evened out and was fine... I have have 2 GMC trucks and a 2009 Forester that I do the same with and have never had a problem... You are good at finding stuff to substantiate your arguments and demand others to prove you wrong with what you and you alone determine to be valid sources of information, find a post based on a personal experience of someone having their Fit screwed up by filling it all the way to the top... It would be nice if you had information based on experience rather than what someone else has claimed that likely as not is as inexperienced as you... You remind me of people that try to tell an old combat vet how to fight a war and how they are more knowledgeable because they saw a John Wayne movie.

I'd like very much to stomp a mud hole in your ass for belittling Silver Bullet, DSM and myself by insinuating that what we have experienced is wrong or irrelevant because you read something in the owners manual while at the same time insisting that the manual recommends the use of 87 octane fuel which it doesn't. I will give you credit for being the third most annoying person that has ever posted here.. No I can't rate you that high... You're about the sixth or eighth... You are definitely one of the neediest narcissist I have ever seen anywhere though, even on psych wards I had the keys to and a few where I didn't... I've even known people of your ilk that were fragged but that was long ago. Goodnight, I'm going to take my medication and hit the sack.

Since I mainly do short drives, I get about 280-330 from a tank. From a fillup to danger low I once did 410 miles. But I really don't recommend it.
My little mini cooper would do 450 easily, i've have gotten a best of 590, but that was an overfill of 14 gallons and a cruise control of 65mph. Small car, BIG tank.

The holy trinity of ff seems a bit like the 3 stooges when you put it that way.

Out of every one on this site you should be getting the best mpg. Its a sad case that you don't even know that. I am very familiar with Georgia and with the climate you have and I know how the roads are. If you would have listen and tried it from the beginning you would have been able to disprove it if it was not true and have the numbers to prove it but instead you call people names and provide references that you can buy and even put your name on it because they all say the same thing but with different names. So if were the three stooges then that makes you the idiot.
