First Road Trip Impressions

On Wednesday morning, my wife, took our three dogs to the kennel, and then packed up enough clothing for a Caribbean cruise, enough snacks to sustain us on a desert island for several days, a portable DVD player to keep the kids busy, and our two kids ages twelve and nine into our fit Sport Automatic for a two hundred mile educational trip down to Austin Texas and returing on Friday.

The car did very well on interstate 35 among the many trucks and busses heading for South Texas and the Mexican border. At a steady 65 MPH the automatic transmission would constantly have to shift down to fourth gear and increase the engine RPM from a steady 2,500 to between 3,500 and 4,000 to negotiate even the most modest hills while in cruise control. Passing slower traffic, such as old pickup trucks, required good planning to merge in with the higher speed traffic in the left lane which were going at least 80 MPH. The car's ride was a little choppy on the well worn pavement and while negotiating the many construction zones, but it felt very sure footed when being passed by large SUVs and Semi-trailer trucks.

Our gas mileage, with the AC running, going to Austin was 33.1 miles per gallon including about 40 miles of city driving before filling up for the return trip. Coming home the car got 32 miles per gallon including 45 minutes of idling at a stand still due to a six car pile up. The wreck was probably due to some crazy UT fans rushing to Dallas for the big party before the UT (University of Texas), OU (Oklahoma University) football game the next day.

I would have no reservation driving this car on a longer trip as long as I didn't have to drive up into the mountains. I wish the engine could sustain a steady 65 MPH without the transmission shifting up and down to negotiate even small hills. For car of this size the Fit was very comfortable and felt very good on the interstate highway. My wife really wanted to buy a Vespa motor scooter, but I convinced her that the Fit was a better choice with a family of two kids, three dogs, and an occasional cross country trip.

We just drove up to Ct from Md (400 miles) and the Fit performed well... Averaged about 33mpg on the way up. The car handled well and no issues keeping up with traffic. High winds moved the car around a bit but was a uneventful trip otherwise...

I just took the Fit (milano red sport auto) on a 1000km each way trip to Ohio from Ottawa. The fit got 37mpg on the trip and handled it very very well. The cruise control was VERY handy. I kept the car around 70-75mph the whole way.

How did your passengers do?

Did they tolerate the trip? Fall asleep? Stay up and act happy?

Usually my kids tell me to slow down cause they feel sick from the curves in the road and my Mario Andretti style of driving.

Thanks for the summary.

How did you like the stereo?
