If youve had AC compressor clutch problems?

If you've had an AC compressor issue that turned out to be the clutch, pleas post up and whether or not you've had the under-tray on the car.

Ive always thought looking at it that without the tray the compressor was going to take a lot of wheel spray and road grunge that could shorten its life..

So What say all of you?

Can you describe the issue in details, symptoms, things to look for, etc.?
Thanks.

Its fairly common for the fits to have their AC quit working and it relates to the compressor clutch not engaging. Some remove a shim with brings the clutch back to function often for quite a while.

Mechanics (Dealers) will often prescribe an entire new compressor and labor to change it when the clutch can be swapped out in < an hour with no pump down of the system. and costs about 60 bucks in parts.. Vs the 1200+ a dealer will charge.

never had A/C problem on my GD, GE's, and GK.

but on the 09 GE the blower fan switch blew which required warranty repair. it still blew cold air, just lost the variable fan speeds until the free fix.

I'm hoping to do 2 things, figure out how often the ac clutch fails,
and whether or not having it exposed makes the problem worse.

Hoping enough fit followers answer to see if we get a significant pattern.

Of course not having the protection of the tray will make things worse. It's there for that specific reason, to keep the splashes and dirt away.

Funny,, not many answering the pole,,, so I know I've seen a few on here..
The point of the pole, can we document how many have actually failed and how old were they and such.. Oh well....

I have had two Honda Fit A/C compressors fail, a 2007 and a 2008 model. Not sure why the first failed since I did not check the clutch before replacing the compressor. Second time I did check the clutch and it was dead.
The nice thing on a Honda fit 2007 and 2008 is that the compressor is very easy to access after removing the plastic tray and can be checked using either an ohmmeter, or with a 12 volt source. If it works then check the relay fuse by swapping both fuses with the horn relay (easy to check). If is does not work then either remove one or more shims until the clutch binds and see if the compressor works then. In my case, I needed to grind quite a bit off the clutch center to get the unit to operate temporarily, but it did prove that the compressor was working fine. I then ordered a clutch coil and plate from ebay. Beats buying a new compressor, or paying Belle Tire to check the system by evacuating the unit and refilling it again. A nice way to gouge customers but not technically logical when the clutch is so easy to check as outlined above.
Honda wanted $109 fore the clutch coil and $219 for the clutch plate. That didn't make sense to me and so I opted for the EBay combination part for $119.

Cars undersides/mechanicals have been "splashed" since the beginning of the automobile .....that undertray is there for aero/mpg reasons more than anything. Our used '15 came without one, and I'm not inclined to replace it

This exact thing just happened to me. Car is at the garage now, and they said it's the clutch, but they want to replace the whole thing because they said that the 08 fit clutch is not "a normal AC clutch" so it sounds like they've never done one. Is this a job I could do in my driveway, or is it complicated? I'm a pretty good shade tree mechanic. Also, if you can share where you'd get the parts, I'd really appreciate it.

2010, 86K miles. A/C clutch blew out a month ago, cost $995 with a discount. They replaced the drive belt and did a suck-n-fill at the same time for the price. They also had to replace the driver coil.
