Strap wrench? Place it near the base and hope it doesn't deform too much before it starts spinning.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion I will try strap wrench tomorrow and will let you know. could you please also let me know what could be the worst situation if strap wrench doesn't work?

Using large 3...3.5 inch opening size vise grips around the filter seam (where the plate meets the canister). There is a small risk of scratching the filter gasket seat outside of the contact area.

Yep, a strap wrench should do the trick. Dang, that thing is really torqued on.

I tighten new filters by hand, as strong as I can muster with one hand. Never had a leak and they always come off without trouble. Everyone has their technique with this it seems.

Worst case you might have to cut off the filter with maybe a dremel or something like that.

The oil filter should never be torqued down so much though. I just hand tighten it, then maybe just a 1/4" with a strap wrench. The rubber seal should prevent it from backing itself out.

And not to be condescending but, righty tighty, lefty loosey? ;)

did you ever figure this out? I didn't see this thread and am in the exact same situation. But mine is only the head of the filter left. I'm thinking I will have to remove the part that screws into the oil pan if possible.

Just bought this tool and I will see how it goes.

I also think that's a legitimate question, especially since everything appears to be weirder while working underneath the car, and might confuse one which way to loosen it up.

I have a strap wrench, but have been lucky enough to be able to remove & install oil filters just by hand. My strap wrench has never been used yet...but good to have it just in case.

Good luck!

stab what's left of it with a screw driver and turn hard?

I think Jiffy Lube is in your future...

Another example of poor forum ethics:
-someone asks for help and promises an update;
-members give suggestions
-topic starter disappears
-members continue discussion :)
