Yep, a strap wrench should do the trick. Dang, that thing is really torqued on.
I tighten new filters by hand, as strong as I can muster with one hand. Never had a leak and they always come off without trouble. Everyone has their technique with this it seems.

The oil filter should never be torqued down so much though. I just hand tighten it, then maybe just a 1/4" with a strap wrench. The rubber seal should prevent it from backing itself out.
And not to be condescending but, righty tighty, lefty loosey?

did you ever figure this out? I didn't see this thread and am in the exact same situation. But mine is only the head of the filter left. I'm thinking I will have to remove the part that screws into the oil pan if possible.

Just bought this tool and I will see how it goes.

I also think that's a legitimate question, especially since everything appears to be weirder while working underneath the car, and might confuse one which way to loosen it up.
I have a strap wrench, but have been lucky enough to be able to remove & install oil filters just by hand. My strap wrench has never been used yet...but good to have it just in case.
Good luck!
