FIT to fight against cancer in Hawaii
Just to let others know.
I've decided to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held in Waikiki on Oct. 22nd.
http://www.komenhawaii.org/race.htm
I'm running in memory of a friend and next door neighbor, Lynne S. Farm who died July 18, 2006 at age 44 of Leukemia while fighting Breast cancer. She leaves behind two small children. I hope to raise funds to donate in her name towards research against cancer with the help of the Susan G. Koman Foundation.
Anyone who is able to help in my goal to raise funds to fight cancer is welcome to visit my site:

Thanks very much to everyone for any support you can provide.
I only have a month to train!!!!

I just donated $25.00 to the cause. Take lots of pics and have fun at the race man .
What kind of shape are you in, cause 5Ks are pretty easy. I just ran the Run Hit Remix (5 miles) today with 20mins of sleep the night prior to the race. I also had the urge to go #2 around the 2nd mile lol. But I held it in til after the race. Finished in 51mins and 26 secs (still waiting for my official time). Thats about a 10min per mile pace (yeah its pretty slow). So with a month of training, you'll be fine.

Aloha and Mahalo for your help. 5Ks are easy, if you're healthy.
My running background-
18 completed Marathons including 14 in Honolulu, 1 in San Francisco, and 4 Boston Marathons (93, 94, 96, 2000).
Assorted track and field events for Hawaii State Games in the summer
Triathlons from Sprint distance to Half Ironman distance
Racewalking- 2 Firsts and one 2nd at the Honolulu Marathon and competed in the World Cup 20K US trials in California.
But all that came to a sudden halt with two ruptured discs in my back and since then back surgery in late 2004. Nowadays I can walk swim and run a little but I am very wary about getting reinjured.
I have no limits on walking or swimming- I consider these safe. Bending and twisting or load bearing is risky. Running at speed is alot of pounding for me. 5K should be OK with a month to train but I am not the lean runner I was once. For me I've got to get 7 or 8 hours sleep if I expect to get out of bed and recovered for the next day. 20 minutes sleep!- you must be younger than I.
Thanks again for your help and support I really appreciate it.

Just helping a fellow runner out. I also told my friends to support you.
Wow, nice background and sorry about the injury man. How is racewalking like? I never tried it, but it sounds fun.
I'm still a amateur in running and stuff btw . To further delay my progress, my friends and I forgot to register for the LA Triathlon (the Sprint Triathlon) on Sept 10, 2006. It just slipped our minds til a few days after the event.
Btw, I got only 20 mins of sleep because I was so eager to see Vanilla Ice perform a remix of "Ice Ice Baby", I couldn't fall alseep lol.
EDIT:
I don't know how old you are, but I'm 20. Here is a pic from earlier today. Guess which one am I, you'll probably won't get it right on the first try lol.
Everybody, lets donate something.

I don't know which is you!!!!
That's OK. I've got three children and my oldest is 22 and just landed a job doing graphic art in San Jose after finishing college.
Racewalking followed years of running due to numerous running related injuries including a torn achilles tendon in 1990 while training for my very first marathon- I trained all year and in late October just weeks before the Honolulu Marathon in early December I got injured and landed up with surgery and a leg cast to wear for 12 weeks.
After that I was too injured to run so I did triathlons for 2-3 years and even the waikiki roughwater 2.4 mile open ocean swim (not my sport).
I took up racewalking to help reduce the pounding from running. It's very very difficult to do well. I had two Olympic Coaches to help me on and off and really needed to devote about 6+ hours each day to be really really good. I could racewalk 5K in about 23 minutes and 10K in about 45. The very best US racewalkers can do 5K in about 20 minutes or less. For the 50K race they cover 5K in 22 minutes and go faster and faster as the race continues. Here is a picture of the Men in the 2004 50K Olympics:
Anyway thanks for letting your friends know I could use their help and I want you to know that you're getting me motivated now so good work!

Many thanks to Craig for his generous support.
Only a few weeks left. I was busy running last night with my son.
More running tonight if the weather holds up.
Please consider supporting me in my race against cancer.

Good thing the event is not too far away.
My joints are stiff from the last few days but my spirit is not dampened.
I guess I'm not as young as I used to be.

A big Mahalo
Many thanks to Jerry and Theresa for your generous support.
I'm still hard at training with my old legs trying to keep up with my son.
Tonight he beat me in the quarter mile but we were running just under 5 minute per mile pace.
Maybe I'll need some crutches or wheelchair tomorrow!

I take the oath-
Nor rain, nor flash floods, nor earthquakes, nor state wide power outtage...
Can deter me from my task to train sucessfully for the Susan G. Koman 5K race for the cure this sunday 10/22.
I am feeling better with my back pain and ready to rumble rain or shine this week.

We are all winners by participating.
The organizers are expecting 8000 to 10,000 which is great.
I've been in some big races before-
Great Aloha Run about 22,000 runners and walkers each year
Honolulu Marathon up to 26,000 runners and walkers each year
100th anniversary Boston Marathon 1996: 38,706 runners and walkers
Although my competitive running days are behind me I will be running with my son and running for "fun" which long ago I found to be more important than running for time.
Running for fun is "winning".

OK, it looks pretty clear right now- will try to run a few easy miles tonight then rest up tomorrow.
Hopefully get some decent weather for sunday morning- Race day.
Many thanks to all those who supported me and I'm glad I made it through all the events of the last few weeks including a badly sprained ankle a little over a month ago- definitely not something you should try at home.
Almost Race Day- Time to carbo load!
Hey it's only a 5K race... but I like to eat.
