My Police Story........

Background info. first....

VBP, HID headlights 6000K

Ok, so I was driving home and see a cop behind me. I didn't think of anything b/c i wasn't speeding or doing anything illegal. the cop pulls up next to me and then slows down and gets behind me and puts on the lights..... I pull over and a woman cop comes out and goes..

cop: "The reason why I pulled you over was because of your lights. They are blue. Only law enforcement vehicles are allowed to have blue lights"
Me: "The lights come stock like that. This is a new 2007 car. I just bought it beginning of this month"

cop walks to the front of the car and looks at it......... comes back..

Cop: "Only law enforcement vehicles are allowed to have blue lights"
Me: "This car comes STOCK from the dealership like that. The actual housing of the headlights are blue. The white ones come with white housing, black with black. This is a new vehicle."
Cop: "hmmm well, I've never seen this car before. The people that i pulled over before actually changed the bulbs to BLUE, but i see that the actual head lights are blue not the bulbs. Can i see your license and registration please?

I had my license and registration to her.

Cop: "well, im going to let you go, but i can't gaurantee that you wont get pulled over again"

(i didnt feel like arguing so i just OK and Thank you)

anyways, you should have seen the cops face... She looks so puzzled b/c she just saw a new 2007 honda fit with the headlights painted the same color as the body.....

just wanted to share my story

what that knuckle head cop was talking about was actual BLUE lights like police units roll with, those kids that put the blue LED lights in the windshield washer ports get pulled over for it. Only the police can have actual blue lights to cut down on people trying to take advantage and pose as police officers, or confuse dumb drivers.

As my friend would say, "They're probably a rookie"

He's a city cop and I ask him whats legal or illegal to have on your car.

Glad I have the orange fit, I don't think an officer would care.

Police Story

The first time I took the Honda Fit out for a test drive - the first one in our area - a county Sheriff actually drove beside me looking the car up and down. I thought crap - what did I do wrong! Turned out he just smiled at me and seem to like the look of the little Silver Sport Fit! Can't blame him - I really felt that people were looking it over just trying to figure out what it was. My vanity plate is going to read: Fit This !

Cat :X

Not true.

well, I'll concede that it may depend on jurisdiction...I'll explain why.

I'm a commercial driver. I drive a truck for a living...5 nights a week, home every day. Our company colors are blue and white, so, in an effort to bring some "novelty" to our trailer design, they replaced the center top marker light on the trailers with a blue LED. Our drivers started getting pulled over ALL over the place, so they took the case to court. Here's how it turned out:

Apparently, according to the law, you cannot have a BLINKING red or blue light as to create confusion with law enforcement officers. The court ruled that since our trailer marker light did not blink, it did not violate the law. We now carry a court-appointed "stand down" letter in our trailer registration boxes that says we cannot be pulled over, ticketed, or otherwise harassed for that light.

Now, this may be in relation to Federal DOT laws...however since most of this happened in the state of Illinois, I have to believe that it was a mis-interpretation of state law...and being that Illinois is one of the most anal-retentive states in the country, I don't see why it wouldn't fly elsewhere.

Of course all of this is dependent on individual interpretation in each individual jurisdiction...and you're probably opening yourself up to a lot of undue harassment if you WERE to install blue/red lights on your car. I know that when I finally get far enough in my mod list, I'm going to be installing red under-car neon or LED's. I'm sure I'll also get lots of grief. But, as the cop is walking to the car, I'm just going to be smiling into my side view mirror and licking my chops. I make it a point to be well-versed in DOT laws.

Further research states (I believe) that lighting visible from the FRONT or the REAR can be only red, white, or amber. That applies to steady forward or rear facing lamps. I'm going to check into this more to see EXACTLY what the law states so that we all can be informed of our options.

I'm pulling this directly from the National Highway Transportation Safety Admin's website. Apparently all of this is federally mandated by the NHTSA so it wouldn't necessarily be up to local or state jurisdiction, since most cars/trucks are considered "interstate" vehicles.
