okay maybe not experts, but with knowledge greater than mine.
I just bought a PS3 and cannot get it to work with my denon avr 885.
Here is the set-up:
PS3 to the TV with HDMI (audio however is with optical to denon)
Denon is connected to TV with optical

Now the AVR will play tuner so no speaker issue, The PS3 will play through the TV. I CANNOT get the AVR to play anything from tv or the PS3.

note: my father in law says that the PS3 does not need to be hooked up directly to the AVR because the tv has optical out hooked up to it (avr).

I'm way over my head, please help!

Sorry mate, I don't have a PS3 yet, so I have no input for you except that I will be keeping an eye on this thread for tips when I do get mine later this year. Good luck though.

sometimes you can have the audio go from ps3 (or anything) to the tv, and the tv will have audio out- put that into the receiver, than put the receiver on tv - and turn the internal speakers off- sounds like you have it just straight to receiver?

feel my pain? I have friend coming over to help. I just want Dolby Digital with my blu ray, I'm not asking a lot right?

 

did u try going into the ps3 and mess with audio settings? default is set to hdmi, i had to go in and set it to optical manually

 

that was exactly it....that and I forgot to take the little plastic sleeve off of the optical cable.

 

high def gaming in 5.1 is insane!!!!

hahaha. im glad you sorted it out. my buddy has ps3 in 5.1 and call of duty was the most insane game ive ever played with it! you can hear where the helicopter is and you can tell where someone is shooting you from by where the sound is coming from. psn tag=kelsodeez, add me!

 

I'm going to have to figure out the psn tomorrow. Mid terms right now have most of my attention!
