Either the Nikon flavored D40 or D60 would do good. The Canon flavored xti/xsi would also do good. There is really no difference between the 2 companies' cameras, anyone who tells you different is a sackrider for the company. If you have friends who shoot canon and have lenses that you could borrow I would suggest that you get a canon, and likewise with nikon. Go to a best buy or other camera store and play around with the different entry level DSLR's and see which one feels the best in your hands, and which one is easier for you to control.

Looks like ill be going with the D40. Hopefully ill learn to use it. Read a couple of comparisons between the G10 and D40 and thought ill regret it if I go with the G10. Im sure once I master the D40 itll definately take better pictures than a G10. Thanks guys

Well I have been MIA for some time....been so busy with work and school and my backpacking trip too.....
