Lightning strike in Vought Parking lot in Texas

Got an email from a friend of mine & thought I'd share w/ my FF family...
Had a lil thunderstorm this morning. I guess a couple cars got hit.
The gal w/ the p/u had no insurance, ouch.

WOW!!!

Condolences to Kelly Dinneen's (floor beam ME / Planner) whose jeep got struck by lightning this morning in our parking lot. Hope none of you were parked close by.
Good reason not to sit in your car during thunderstorm!

i don't think you would feel a thing. its so much voltage running through your body you would go numb and get paralyzed.

Showed the pic to my GF who works as an accident investigator for an insurance company and here was her take on this. Bear in mind this is based on just the pic so no conclusions, just guessing based on past experience/cases.

Well, if the jeep had a soft top or had the top off then it MIGHT have started the fabric on fire. That would be possible. Otherwise, you're right, the cars usually don't burn when struck by lightning because they're grounded. I'd be leaning toward fraud but would obviously have to look into it with more detail before making any conclusions...

That really sucks for the cars parking next to it! They aren't in much better shape!

I call BS, unless the thing was a soft top and had an open gas container in it, it would not have anything but a minor burn mark.

FIY if you are in a car and the car gets truck by lightning. the worse that would happen to you is ear damage. and a tingly feeling.

That's some serious burning... there's no way in hell that thing blew up from a bolt of lightning. Like others have stated, cars are grounded. Even if the fabric caught fire I can't imagine it getting hot enough to spread that much. Something doesn't seem right.

I call BS as well -- I forget what show it was, but one of those TLC/Discovery shows touched on this very thing and the result was nothing happened to the car or the guy in it. They rolled a car into a high voltage test facility to basically zap it with stupid high amounts of current and voltage, first the car by itself, and then later with the announcer sitting inside. Results? The guy was just jabbering away the whole time they were arcing massive amounts of current into the roof less than a foot away from his head. Then when it was over the car started up like it always did and he drove out of the test area.
